guys - is it acceptable to use the shuttle to pick up dinner 1-2 miles away, have the driver wait a minute and get you back to the hotel?

Otherwise, they're good for anything you need them for -- usually within a stated max radius. I've used hotel shuttles for the very purpose you suggest above. For those that don't, suggest you deal directly with the driver and slip him a large bill.
