I took an AirEuropa flight from JFK to a local airport in Spain with a layover in Madrid. The flight was delayed, I didn't get The food I ordered, and to top it all off, my suitcase was lost. It took 2 days for AirEuropa to locate the suitcase. When I finally got it, I noticed it was opened and my laptop (which was underneath some clothing) was stolen.

I called up AMEX and since I have Premium Baggage Insurance, they told me I could spend upto $500 for my delayed luggage. I got socks, some undershirts, underwear, shaving cream, etc. for 5 days. The following day I got my suitcase (I had no way of knowing my suitcase will be found the next day and returned to me. By the same token, it could have been lost forever).

My questions are as follows:
1) does anyone have any experience with AMEX insurance? Would they deny my "supplies" for 5 days? I spent less than a half of my "allowance."
2) I receieved my laptop as a present in June. Thus, I don't have a receipt to accompany the claim. Any advise how to go about it? I am on my way to the local police to file a claim and make it official, but how likely am I to actually get reimbursed? This is all very upsetting....
3) how likely is AirEuropa to compensate me for the experience and the theft? They allowed me to go buy some essentials only *3* days after my suitcase (with all my clothing, etc) was lost. The amount allocated was ridiculous as well: 100 euros.... So they expected me to walk around with the same underwear, socks, and shirt for 3 days.

I am still abroad and writing this on my iPhone. Please excuse any unclarity - it's a small screen and the connection is iffy, so I want to finish this post ASAP before I lose connection.

Your input is greatly appreciated!

1) no one cares as long as it's under the $500 limit. Some people need a suit to attend a business meeting, you know.

2) remember the limit is $500 per incidence

3) don't think laptop computer in checked baggage is covered by airlines. As for amount allocated, it's all in the tariff. Loss bags are compensated by weight, unless you declared excess value.

A typical tariff from a full service airline (not Air Europa):

9.3.4You are prohibited from including in your Checked Baggage, fragile or perishable items, artwork, cameras, money, jewellery, precious metals, silverware, computers, diving computers, personal electronic devices, negotiable papers, securities or other valuables, business documents, passports and other identification documents or samples.
