Practical Travel Safety Issues - wireless outdoor temp sensor (900Mz transmitter) in checked luggage?

I am sending an indoor-outdoor thermometer home with my parents.

The wireless outdoor sensor transmits short bursts of data in the 900Mhz (cordless phone) band. Because the weatherproof sensor has a cover that must be opened with a jeweler's screwdriver, I would like to install the batteries before giving it to them. It will be in checked luggage.

Is this a potential problem? With all the radio noise everywhere, I am not sure if this weak transmitter can be detected, but in any case, I certainly want to avoid any hassle. There seems to be nothing specific in the TSA documents.

I'd buy the tiny screwdriver and send it along with the thermometer before I put something w/ batteries that can transmit signals at all in checked luggage.

I wouldn't be concerned with TSA, but I'd leave the batteries out until arrival. Why? Electronics with transmitters are forbidden in flight. I don't know if the ban applies to the cargo hold, and I think it unlikely the plane would crash due to the transmitter, but why risk violating FAA regulations?

I agree with the two previous posters that you should not send it with the battery in and the transmitter active.

I don't know where your parents are flying from or flying to. But if it involves an international flight, be aware that in some countries an unlicensed 900 MHz transmitter like this would be illegal. PM me if you want details.

Ok, thanks to everyone...I won't do it. Providing a jeweler's screwdriver is a good idea.
