...pretty regularly nowadays, in my experience. It was the case sometimes if one waited to reserve until within a couple of days before the reservation was to start - until recently. Almost seems not worth the call anymore. Anyone else encountering this?

OK, I give up. What rates do NetVIP refer to?

I think it was before you started participating on this board that there was specific discussion of various rates, including VIP. VIP and NetVIP is/are categories like SOS, which, as you probably know, means Significant Organization Savings. The VIP rates have come in lower - until recently. Not much discussion of actual such (SOS or VIP) rates here in the past year or so because it generated difficult debate, the cons prevailed, and some rates actually did disappear, possibly because of publicity on this board. LPGA was an example of one that disappeared around that time.

One point to add (which I realized while seeing a Choice ad on TV touting "20% off") is that SOS rates no longer are any lower than publicly available rates; it's rather that they have much better cancellation terms, because they provide the discount without requiring prepayment and no cancellation, which the publicly available 20% does. But with respect to what the hotel gets, it seems in the same ballpark either way...
