I was curious how does SAS handle their overbooked situations since I have no first hand experience on SK with this problem...

an upcoming arn-ord flight seems very full and mostlikely overbooked, I wondered if they have a possibility to volunteer ahead of time for rerouting? I will be cheking in via another country (Finland) so not so sure how I would go about checking... I would not mind changing since ord is NOT my final destination and I dont care about a little delay for the proper incentive :D

Any first hand experience? my arn connection is a super tight 45mins so I doubt I would have time or a chance to volunteer there anymore so any tips are welcome :)

Your chances are not that good, as you will be already checked in for the flight in Finland. If the flight is overbooked, and they are looking for volunteers, then you will have to ask at the gate in ARN. Like you say, the tight connection makes it tough.

Your only chance is if there has been a delay and/or trouble getting volunteers or offloading latecomers. It's easier if you don't have any checked baggage. Give it a try. Stranger things have happened.

I figured as much, too bad they dont have a system for this at online checkin to ask for volunteers :) makes it easier for them too :) I never take nonstop flights so I doubt I will EVER get a DVB or a IDB :) this time I would have had no problem doing so but with such short connections it doesnt seem likely...

Despite your tight connection, you may still have a chance at the gate. SK will not make VDB decisions until it is clear that in fact there are too many pax, i.e. until shortly before dep.

During the summer most SK flights to/from US are overbooked in Economy but often it is solved by up-gr. EBG pax to Y+ and from Y+ to C. VDB is actually quite rare - your chances of an upgrade to Y+ or C are much better :-)

Well both are quite acceptable to me :D how early do they start to upgrade status pax? few hours before or?

Or you could sign up for an OT upgrade. I think the common understanding is that an oversold economy leads to OT upgrades clearing so you get more points as well as the better seat. You could get an op-up, but why risk it?

Indeed, however I am in Y+ now so if I get a op up im happy, If I do not im okay being in Y+ too, I would prefer a VDB for use on my next trip though as on this trip I am NOT on a tight schedule :)

I did look into the OT route but 174€ for a couple of thousand EB points was not worth it to me personally :)

As of today (Aug 14th) the flight is looking a little more open (taking the date you mentioned in the Optiontown Upgrade thread):

Its funny about that flight too that its the only one where I cannot do online seat selection... Keeps saying unavailable?

Indeed - the SAS fare bucket inventory system appears to utilize several new laws of physics that as yet are unknown to those outside the company ...

I am on a flight next week PEK - CPH for which availability was showing zero in all classes for several days (T-7 to 15 days). Yesterday (T-6 days) I checked again and there were 9 seats at least in C, Y+ and M (though not in all fare buckets).

Good luck in any case with your flight. I guess the best chance in any case is to check in late, and don't make a seat reservation (though it seems you can't in any case).... You might get lucky and be told you need to get a seat number at the gate in ARN - so if it is oversold that will give you a better chance of a VDB.

Heh this is actually comical as now I dont see any availability on the flight in all classes?

SAS makes the seatmaps to/from US unavailable at -72 hours. You can't do changes online, neither can travel agencies or SAS phone sales. Very annoying.

Also depends on how many people have already volunteered before OP asks.
