No idea, really, but maybe they have to find a way to pay for any improvements they plan to make prior to the WC and Olympics? :)

No, it's not only you . . .

This is a result of the bubble-like increase in real state prices in Brazil and the huge influx of foreigners, both tourists and workers in some industries (most notably oil).

And prepare yourself to the high cost of living here . . .

I do live here... :D one hour out of Sao Paulo so normally I don´t stay in the city.

I find the prices amazing really!

I also find the prices amazing, and I'm glad I invested in real estate there 11 years ago.

Getting by in Sampa these days is with R$ 4000-6000. or more per month. I'm also glad I have relatives to stay with when not on business there.

And here comes the World Cup and Olympics

No you're not crazy, prices have been exploding for the last few years (and not just hotels). As a foreigner you can take these USD prices, multiple it by the "front desk exchange rate" to get to Reals, then have that charged to your foreign credit card which incurs the exchange rate conversion back to your local currency and the 2.5% foreign transaction fee.

Brazil is expensive and has been for some time. The higher rates are not, I fear, going to infrastructure improvements for the World Cup and Olympics. We were at the Sao Paulo international airport (GRU) last week and it remains an aging facility with poor facilities and maintenace problems (e.g., several elevators out of commission). The governmetn is facing a big budget deficit (former Pres Lula-- who will likely run again with high approval ratings-- spent money like a drunken sailor) but current Pres. Dilma says she won't cut back on social or infrastructure programs. Will be hard to do.

No, you misinterpreted what SoCal posted. He said that President Lula spent too much money on drunken sailors

And how does this differ from any other government? :D

3544quebec, I think I had not misinterpreted what SoCal said :).

Actually, I agree with all he said (and more . . .), it was only his "qualifications" as a sailor that I didn't know about.

Now, this (qualification + state) explains lots of things that happened during his government :D.

Thanks. It´s only a night in each city so it doesn´t really matter.

It seems that even at these prices hotels are doing great business. Left to book the Sheraton Porto Alegre today and the hotel is sold out! Will be staying at the Mercure around the corner...

From 2007 - 2011 I was often in Brazil every other month, if not every month. Hotel prices are nuts. I usually stayed at either the Sheraton WTC or Hilton Morumbi since my office is in that complex. I've paid up to $600 and many times the hotels were even sold out. Crazy!

But if you have a choice btwn the Sheraton and the Hilton, pick the Hilton, much nicer hotel.

Not sure, but I assume that Lula cutting off his finger in a factory accident would have disqualified him from military service. I imagine many in the military (drunk or sober) would have been thrilled if Lula and his successor spent lots of money on them. Wouldn't want to be one of the soldiers based in the favelas right now (some reportedly without guns). Deficit or not, the government will spend a lot on the Olympics (as any government does), and the press will not mention inconvenient facts such as that the Olympics virtually always cost more than they bring in. Montreal learned that the hard way.

OP: those prices are in U.S. Dollars, not Brazilian Reais, right? It is election season, so maybe politicians are renting blocks of rooms for strategy conferences.

.......according to the latest Hotels.com hotel price index.......

The 2016 Olympic host city Rio de Janeiro in Brazil is the most expensive city in the world, according to the hotel index, which says its prices have gone up 25 per cent to an average of $294 a night. The price hike is due to the city's strong economic conditions.

Hotel prices have been steady for the last 2 or 3 years. On average, I've been paying about $250/night. It used to cost me about half as much for the same type of accommodations, but that's before the dollar lost more that a third of its value against the Real.

Food too, has doubled, in fact, everything is expensive.

The beach, however, remains free, and that's where I'm heading. :D

The prices are crazy. It's like going to NYC or London price-wise.
