Mrs. appmath will be flying internationally on LH out of IAH on an econ award flight. There are no special circumstances. Is it possible to obtain a gate pass from LH ticketing counter?

Its at the discretion of the station, when you are accompanying at UM, parent with infant, PRM etc they don't hesitate, for others you need a valid reason.
Since its IAH, you might want to apply the GGCHECKPOINT line 53 trick that gets you a gatepass with UA club membership. Search the UA MP forum for details.
