I will probably lose Diamond this year so every base point counts. If I stay from say 12/26 to 1/3 do the the 2012 days count in 2012? Do I have to check out 12/31 for it to count as a 2012 stay then re-check in on 12/31 to 1/3 whic will be a 2013 stay? In other words do I have to have to separate reservations for this to help me the most for my status?

Many other threads have reported the stay / day / points credit will post points and status indicators as of the checkout day, iirc. And if you check out and check back in, the stay is generally treated as one stay; though perhaps there is a way to change the outcome by speaking with the hotel management I might not count on it.

No matter what you do if your stay is from December 26th to January 3, it will post for credit in 2013

The only way around it is to have one reservation from December 26 to 30 (checking out on the 31st), go to another hotel for at least one night, and finish off the stay.

Checking in and out, if at the same hotel, will all be combined into one stay and will credit on January 3.

You may want to review: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/hilton-hhonors/894042-new-year-s-eve-stays-december-31-january-1-credit-year.html
there are posts that say the stay may post as of the date of check-out, however, there are also posts that say if the nights are needed to complete status qualification then those nights can count in the previous year (or even twice in the current year too). The gist of it is if you check in on 12/31, that should count for the following year (year of check-out). If there are multiple nights in December, it can go many ways.

Best to avoid the confusion if you can, but if your stay must include 12/31, call HH to get their current read on how their rules will be applied, and GET NAMES! It can be a good way to get a jump on next year if you're topped off for this year.

This is correct. However, if you call and it affects your tier status due you can get it adjusted. But, it may take a phone call or two. BUt, do not expect those after Dec. 31, 2012 to count for status for this year. January 1, 2013 will def. start the next status requal. timeframe.

Could you check back in without your HHonors #?

There's no need to do this, so why would you waste the night credit if you don't have to.

Yes you could

But they will still probably combine them into one (as has been reported here many times), and count it all as one stay.
