American Express Membership Rewards - Booking one FHR night plus one regular night

Anybody have success booking your first night using the FHR rate and then a second night using a regular rate?
Obviously you'd have to have 2 reservation, but wondering if this would work. That way, get a $100 Food & Beverage credit (as well as maybe an upgrade), but not pay the higher FHR rate for 2 nights since you only get the benefit once.

Shouldn't be an issue. Be sure to tell the desk at checking about both reservations and you are likely to lose a possible room upgrade at check in.
In most cases, I have found the fhr breakfast worth the room rate difference.
I would be prepared for the possibility that the hotel will ask you to check out after the first night, and check in again, which means the $100 credit would need to be consumed during the first day.

If you've found a better rate, ask them to match it?

Who AMEX? I've never seen them do that.

They have for me. Hotel 1000 in Seattle had a better rate on their web site. I phoned up and had it matched twice.

Had them match better rates also... or at least made them go low enough that the benefit of the breakfast was worthwhile.
I know we're all here to get the best deals and save some money but on the one hand, we've got people complaining about the devaluation of benefits while trying to wring every last drop out of them as well. It's a two-way street...

Oh many times in my experience. It never hurts to ask!

Exactly!!
When I participate in any WOW offers, I would do my part to spend some money at the property.
If everybody is taking advantage of this kind of offers but leaves no meat for the hotels, these offers wouldn't last!

I have done this for the exact reasons you stated. The vouchers I was given for breakfast/spa didn't expire until the end of the year, so I didn't have to use them in the first day - this could be hotel specific, I don't know.
They did upgrade me and didn't make me move, but it took a little persuading at the front desk. I did have to merge the two reservations.
