Not as a MR, but this THIS THIS is the fare I need for June:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/mileage-run-deals/1372985-ua-sgn-920-ai.html

My question is, how do savvy mileage runners and frequent fliers find this info? I've looked everywhere, but I cannot for the life of me find that fare advertised anywhere. In fact, even Skyscanner has it all the way at the bottom and you have to dig for it. The only reason I knew the fare was there to find is because I read that thread.

Would I seriously have to manually input every variable into United's site? I know there used to be tools for this sort of thing, like farecompare and dream map, but they're all shut down for some reason to do with government and money and stuff I'll pretend I have no time to understand.

I'm not sure how all of the MR forum posts are found, but generally one can sit with Expertflyer and skim over fares for published city pairs. Additionally sbm12's travel tools site provides a listing similar to Farecompare's old listing. "Advertised" fares are generally worse than what would be otherwise commonly available.

As far as the routing goes, once you have a fare between a city pair that is applicable for your travel dates, you can consult the routing rules (which are generally the same across all the fares a carrier might publish between two city pairs except for "via Atlantic" versus "via Pacific" fares for some destinations) and look for flights with ITA in that bucket. The unusual routings in the MR forum are generally for the sake of maximizing the miles covered in the routing rules rather than finding flights in that fare bucket.

Welcome to FlyerTalk TrixieTang!

Unfortunately, part of the rules for that fare would seem to exclude its use in June:

PERMITTED 01JAN THROUGH 23MAY OR 27AUG THROUGH 20NOV ON
THE OUTBOUND TRANSPACIFIC SECTOR.
That might explain why you can't find it?

No, I understand that I won't be able to use this fare in June, I'm just asking how the OP for that thread was able to find it in general for anytime without it being advertised as a sale or discount.

I'd originally posted this in Mileage Run because I do plan to MR later this year, but coincidentally found that fare, which I need not as a MR but as a trip for four people. I'm wondering how those who MR a lot are able to find these fares at all.

Anywhere to SGN usually runs from $1300 to as much as $3000 for economy, so I'm hoping I can find a similar price as above for June. Arriving tends to connect in HKG, whereas departing connects in NRT. I was hoping there would be promo pricing for UA's new direct route from SFO to TPE, but I haven't found anything like that yet. I don't know how to find it if it weren't advertised.

What it this that you speak of, friend?

Okay, I found sbm12's tool page, and under the flexible fare option I found IAH to SGN Jun 2013 for $865 (!!) for L. But sbm12's tools have no reference for the data. United.com had the fare at $1259 for L. I understand the fare tool on a blog may not be accurate, but if it is, where does he and others get the info?

It's possible that the full fare code (more than just a single letter) you found differs from the one being used to price your ticket on United.com due to differences in advance booking requirements, minimum/maximum stay requirements, etc.

Some of us check pricing on specific destinations fairly often. I personally check fares to HKG, BKK, MNL, SGN & SIN at least once a day.

What tool(s) do you use to check prices? And do you have a set airport you fly from? I can fly out of many airports, but manually checking prices for what can add up to 20+ city pairs is exhausting.

The $865 fare is 'exclusive of taxes and fees', which means taxes and fees are additional.

I use expertflyer membership as well but it seems the international fuel charge is a different amount each week for the same city pairs. Its had to tell what the full price is going to be
