United MileagePlus (Consolidated) - Upgrading Round the World fares on UA & LH ??

Hi all looking for some advice on upgrading a RTW ticket

Trip is as follows: NYC-AMSTERDAM-ROME-SHANGHAI-NYC

There are some short connections between the AMS - Rome and Rome - Shanghai parts. The 1st 2 flights are UA and everything else is LH. I did the Itin on the star alliance RTW page and it puts me in H class for each leg.

Obviously I would like to upgrade the 3 long legs to Biz using miles, so couple questions.

1. Will Lufthansa allow a mileage upgrade in H class from Rome to Shanghai (via FRA or MUC). In regular ticket I was told by rep only Y & B fare are eligible for upgrade. Also where does UA Plat fall in waiting list if they do allow or in case of Y & B?

2. Will UA allow the upgrade in H class on en route to AMS and then from Shanghai back to NYC? Their fare chart shows H as upgradeable but the round the word desk didn't think it was possible, tho I could always try once it's booked.

I was told also told me that if I book it on the SA website it will be ticketed by LH, however I could send a UA rep a PDF of the itin and she could put it thru and I'd get a UA ticket. Safer bet in case I need to make changes I would think.

There is no waitlist -- if space exists you can upgrade otherwise you need to call back and check again -- no waitlisting.

Since you are a plat, you are 25K miles from being a 1K and thus earning GPUs. As a 1K you can convert electronic GPUs to paper, and upgrade on a standby basis, on many lower cost LH fares. Start using elite maximizer now so that you get to 1K sooner,

You will definitely be able to request the upgrades for the UA segments using miles+ the H class copay. Won't be able to do any of the LH flights as the others have pointed out.

RTW tickets are like any other re upgrades. This is a RTW lite since it booked in H (for most airlines). If you book a full RTW then it books into M class. In the old days it was B class, which would have been nice today for EQMs and upgrades.

I am doing a RTW in economy (first one in eco) where all the longhaul is on UA and LH, so I can upgrade everything using SWUs. I will only actually (hopefully) fly three eco legs, all intra-Europe.

Another comment is that RTWs ex-USA are expensive. My ticket was USD 3000 incl tax ex Korea. Also bought it with 15% discount during *A 15th anniversary celebration.

p.s. "RTW desk" must have been the Star Alliance agents (LH staffed) out of Germany. Very competent normally. But they will not know anything about internal UA upgrade policies.
