Southwest Rapid Rewards - Companion pass & award ticket
I should earn the CP for the first time this September. :)
I am planning on an OAK-PHX trip with my girlfriend the first weekend of October.
Should I book now 1 award ticket for me (taking avantage of the low fare) and then will I be able to add her as a CP ticket end of September, without having to change my ticket (i.e not paying the extra points as I assumed the ticket price will go up by then...)
Thank you

You can book your companion at any time up until the last minute if there is still a seat available on the flight.
If you have the points, book now for both of you. When you get the CP, designate her as your companion, book her a CP ticket and then cancel her original ticket. The points will go back into your account. If you pay for her ticket in cash and cancel, the funds will still be available but they will be in her name and only she could use them.

I would not use a companion pass on OAK-PHX or other short flights that are relativley cheap.
I would save the award for a higher priced route or a trip to the east.
Use it if its set to expire in a month.

I believe the OP meant "points" rather than "award ticket" (and you meant "award ticket" rather than "companion pass"). If not, then yes it's a bad idea to use an award for a cheap flight unless it's expiring soon.

Yes, I meant redeeming points (and not an award). My bad for the confusion and thanks everyone for the help

I am in same situation. Do you know can I use points for both of us right now and add her as companion later on?

Yes.
If there are still seats available, book the CP and cancel the points booking (in that order) and the points will go back into the account.
If it is sold out, still check to see if it will let you book a companion pass, often it will. Book CP and cancel as above.
If it will not let you book, call CS, tell them the situation and they will put the CP holder in the booked seat and then cancel the points reservation for you.

Thanks. I just realized I am just short on points to buy two tickets.
One way is to use my points for my ticket and her points for her and then her points will be refunded.
Can I buy both tickets with companion points and add her later? Strange thought!!!

The points in your account are regular points. When you get your companion status no points are deducted from your account, you can actually use the points before you get your companion pass. When you use your companion pass no points are taken for your companion. You can buy both tickets with the points in your account and when you get the pass just put her on as your companion and cancel the ticket you purchased with points and they will go back into your account:)

Sorry guys,My question was not clear.I will designate my spouse as companion. She has more RR points than me and I am planning to book tickets by using her points. I assume when CP pass kicks in she will get half of points refunded!!!
