Star Alliance - Creative routings for LHR-HKG?
LHR-HKG-SYD must be one of the worst routes to fly frequently if you want *A, but I may be flying *A a lot in the near future. I need to go LON-HKG twice in the next few months, and OW flights are all quite expensive, so I wonder if it's worthwhile trying to get *G on A3 now. These trips would be enough miles flown, but not if I only get credited 50% from discounted Y.
Can anyone suggest some creative routings to bump up the miles but keep the cost down? Time doesn't matter (but no long layovers) and it doesn't have to be on one PNR.

NZ nonstop obviously doesn't interest you.
AC LHR-YYZ/YVR-HKG
UA LHR-ORD/SFO-HKG
LH LHR-FRA-HKG
LX LHR-ZRH-HKG
TG LHR-BKK-HKG
SQ LHR-SIN-HKG
But, if you want creative, I would do something like LHR-NRT return on
OZ via ICN, or non-stop on NH, then buy a round the world ticket
starting in NRT nested between your return flights. Either a special, or
a YRWTSTAR1.

I think the longest one-stop trip is LHR-JNB-HKG on SA. But this will probably be expensive.
A more reasonably priced itinerary (at least on Expedia) is: LHR-(SK)-CPH-(SK)-BKK-(TG)-HKG

How about TK? Best Y product in the alliance, one of the few to offer full mileage earning even on the lowest fares, and presumably the most miles of any official *A connection. And once you've earned *G, the IST lounge is a massive treat.

I do HKG-LHR several times per year. Lately I have been doing it like this:
HKG-BKK on TG
BKK-LHR on MS with a few hours stop in Cairo.
I usually take C class the total price is usually about 30% to 50% less than other *A choices and it is nice to stay a day or 2 in BKK each way. Not so sure about the cost in Y.

Interesting, but that's only for TK's FFP. Will consider joining when I am sure I will earn enough in 12 months to get *G.
How can I get TK's website to display the booking class? It doesn't seem to show the same fares as expedia or ITA, which book into P and earn nothing on A3.
MS looks like a good option in J, but the Y price is what I would expect to pay for C class!

For what is worth, I am not aware of any TK revenue booking class that doesn't earn 100% miles in UA's programme. I'm pretty sure you didn't mean to suggest anything different, but for the record obviously any *G card would give you access to the lounge.
If you are signed up for (or would consider trialling) Expertflyer Pro, you can check the fare for each booking class (minus taxes, mind) and compare it to the fare quoted (which, anyway, should be the lowest booking class showing availability in Expertflyer's flight availability search engine). Not formally waterproof, but should give you a pretty good idea.

I'm pretty sure the extra 30%-50% the other airlines collect doesn't make up for the booze that I would consume on any airline that (unlike MS) serves it.

If you create a dummy booking on the TK website, it will show you fare class at the very end before processing payment, a bit of a pain, but will get it done.
I also second Passmethesickbag, the TK lounge is a real treat, best in *A by far.
