An interesting tie-up for Virgin Australia, in Aspire Aviation‘s opinion, would be Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific Airways’ wholly-owned subsidiary Dragonair. First of all, Cathay Pacific has a very strong operation to Hong Kong with a 8.4% year-over-year growth in passengers number to/from Australia ending May 2012. Moreover, codesharing with Cathay Pacific on Hong Kong-Sydney route and Dragonair from Hong Kong-China routes would grant instant access to many secondary Chinese destinations that are unmatched even by Singapore Airlines and SilkAir.
What do you think?
QANTAS will be angry!

QF and CX are founding members of OW but they hate each other with a passion - indeed, QF doesn't codeshare CX at all. It codeshares with MU in China.
It will look very weird if DJ/VA choose to tie up with KA - while QF choose to tie up with MU in China. It will look more weired after DJ/VA joins *A.
QF is about tie up with QR (http://www.news.com.au/business/companies/qantas-to-form-union-with-qatar-airways/story-fnda1bsz-1226417495551) and EK (http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/aviation/qantas-codeshare-deal-to-be-done-within-six-months-says-emirates/story-e6frg95x-1226441265928), looking for opportunities for JV with MH (http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/07/26/malaysia-press-idINL4E8IQ05O20120726) and MU (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/breaking-news/budget-airline-jetstar-applies-for-hong-kong-licence/story-e6frf7k6-1226431305037) - I bet QF will leave OW one day.
very misleading thread title - they are talking hypotheticals here.

Not true - QF codeshares with CX to FCO (Rome).

You see this is exactly what I don't understand. QF could have diverted its kangaroo traffic to HK and then rely on BA, CX and Finnair for European bound flight, even flights to the Middle East and India.
Highly unlikely I would think - VA already codeshares to HKG with VS and SQ through to China
