Hello,
We will have KIX-HND 7AM-8AM then HND-LAX departing at midnight.
do we have to pick up the bags at Haneda ? planning on doing some quick sightseeing in Tokyo so it would be nice that we can check-in all bags in KIX.
thank you all for your input.

MH.

for KIX-HND check-in cut off is 20 min before the flight. Just try to get there 30 min before and you'll be fine ^

At midnight I will have a connecting flight HND-LAX, so when I check-in at KIX will it be a domestic or an international check-in ?
thank you.

Domestic (since you'll be leaving from the domestic terminal at KIX), but they will be able to do through check-in for your international portion as well, so you should be able to just get on the transfer bus at HND and go through security at the international terminal without stopping at the check-in desk.

Please check the explanation on the ANA home page (http://www.ana.co.jp/wws/us/e/wws_common/guide/plantrip.html).

thanks a lot armagebedar for the very informative link. So I assume it would be safe to arrive at KIX 1-hr prior to departure (the 1st shuttle from our airport hotel departs at 5:30am and our flight departure is 6:55am) , and sorry for asking the same question again, but according to the following quote:

"*Baggage can be checked in only when it is a same day connection. "

We will arrive HND 8am and connecting to flight NH1006 departing 00:05 , so it is considered same day connection for us to do through check-in ?

Really appreciate your input so that we can plan ahead.

My understanding of the rule is bags need to be collected if your connection is over 12 hours long on international connections. And technically 0005+1 is both over 12 hours and on the next calendar day. I'd be surprised if they didn't make you pick up your bags.

If they do make you collect them, I'm sure there are luggage lockers you can store your bags in while you go sightseeing, like there are at Narita. I think it cost 500 yen for the day.

Actually, I checked the Japanese version of the page I linked above, and there are two things I noticed:

1) "Same day connection" means just that -- a connection on the same calendar day
2) Through check-in also applies to connections at HND to international flights leaving at 0100-0300 the next calendar day

So you will be able to check in your luggage at KIX for your flight to LAX without needing to pick it up at HND, cruise603.
