United MileagePlus (Consolidated) - Z seat on 757 EWR-MAN-IAD Worth it?

The question says it all. There is a pretty good Z fare available but I wonder if the refurbished 757-200 is worth the extra expense.

What do you think?

How much?

$4500 to/from my home airport.

I haven't been on one in several years. Most of my international travel is TPAC so 7-8 hours on a flight doesn't seem so extreme.

Sure you've got the right airline forum here? Sounds like a UA flight to me.

I think it's a stupid question
However you don't need a brain to post on flyer talk

Imagine you earned 10 times your income - so $5000 = $500? Would it be worth it???

For some a good bottle of wine is $1000
For some it's $10

How an earth do do you expect folks to assess the value of something without full financial disclosure?

Yikes! You are right. I split my business between DL and UA. Thanks for the heads up.

SteveinA2 is correct in that one doesn't need a brain to post here. It was kind of him to model the thesis so well. I naturally assumed any readers would know I wasn't looking for financial advice and base ten long division problems (base 6 or 17 would have been showy) I was looking for useful information regarding hard and soft product features.

Anyway thanks Javabytes, your reply was very helpful :)

well since you didnt list how much the Z is and how much a coach would be who can say!

That said it also depends for me at least on the timing of the flight. If I will be eating dinner on board by the time that ends there wont be much time left to sleep so Id probably just grab an exit row or E+ and save the $$. On the other hand if you plan to work during the flight being in BF will make a big difference

But I must admitt I fly to NRT,KIX,SIN,SYD,MEL HKG in E+ and even at 6'2" have no problems

It's worth it...if you're willing to spend the $$. Some folks think that those quick UK overnight flights are not worth the cost (but I'd do it)

The ex-CO 757 has full lie flat seats in Business First. It's a solid product.

Only you can decide if you want to pay the premium for a guaranteed lie-flat bed vs. E+. Also no upgrade lottery and 50% PQM.

In2ishn,

Thank you for your brief, if inadvertent, visit to the Delta forum for your question. This thread neatly encapsulates everything that's good and bad when using this site. Glad you got to see you got a civil answer, I personally wouldn't splash out for 7 hours in a TATL 757.

So why wouldn't you get the best seat on the plane?

Probably cos you think the value is not worth it

I would not do it. The BF lie flat seats are supposedly good but I won't do TATL in a 757 on principle. If being stuck for 6-7 hours in a smaller airplane does not bother you and you care about direct flights, it's probably a good idea.

First off, $4500 isn't a good Z fare. $2500 is a good Z fare.

Secondly, if you need to ask, then no, it's not a good deal. You haven't said how much you earn, but for me personally I wouldn't consider paying several hundred bucks an hour to sit in a comfier seat unless I had a net worth of at least... well, definitely enough so that I could live comfortably off the interest without working for the rest of my life and cover all possible eventualities that might arise. Ten million or so sounds like a reasonable cutoff.

If you've got that in the bank then hey, go nuts, spend $2000 each way for what amounts to eight hours in the worst hotel room you'll ever have. Otherwise stick it in your retirement account.

My two cents...

My experience has been that the BusinessFirst seat and service in the ex-CO int'l 757s is the same as it would be in the ex-CO 777s. Clearly you don't have the two aisles or the large numbers of seats as you would in the 777, but up front, the seat itself and the service were pretty much the same.

One noticeable difference was that the flight attendants staffed to the BusinessFirst cabin would assist in the economy cabin as well, so they were a bit more distracted. And my advice would also be to take a seat in the front 3 rows, and avoid the aisles in Row 4 since they're right near the economy lavs.

This answers the "is it worth it" post because, to me, the question was more about the fact that it was BusinessFirst on a 757 versus a widebody. Maybe I read it wrong.

And I'd also make a plea for civility on here. We get enough attitude from the customer service agents and flight attendants, so at least we can be nice to each other. :)
