Interesting, got that email yesterday, making it a TWO day sale for me @:-)
BTW, for those scared of Spirit (like me), they offer a Trial Membership Do you offer a trial membership for the $9 Fare Club?
Yes, trial memberships are offered exclusively to customers booking a flight on spirit.com, and must be purchased in conjunction with a flight. Customers cannot benefit from the membership until after the reservation is purchased. All membership benefits apply to bookings made after the original purchased flight. The trial membership is valid for 60 days from the date of purchase, and renews automatically as an annual membership. The current rate for a 60 day trial membership is $19.95.
Tempted to give them a try, though haven't found a way to do r/t unless it's in the middle of the week or for a longer stay :(

I don't know what you have read about Spirit but I even hate to call them a real airline. They are one of two airlines (including Allegiant) that even charge to put a roller bag in the overhead (from $30-$100 currently). Just type in Spirit Airlines Reviews into Google and read for yourself.

You can, however, bring a personal item which is essentially a small carry-on for free.
When it comes to Spirit, it is a matter of expectations. Yeah, there are a lot of horror stories out there and I'm sure much of them are true. But there are a lot of people who fly Spirit who have very high expectations or expect snacks/bags free similar to how Southwest does things. Its just not the same. And Spirit has fee after fee after fee, some of which are borderline ridiculous and near impossible to avoid. And I wouldn't personally trust them with anything other than a non-stop flight. But bottom line, they are incredibly cheap in a lot of instances and I've had good actual flight experiences with them.

You can also put that free under the seat personal bag in the overhead bin at no charge as long as there is space. It will give you more leg room. At first, I did not realize this, but after a few more flights, the flight attendants have never said a word to me or anyone else doing it.

In many cases they are very cheap if you just get on the plane with a backpack. As soon as you have a rollerbag, you have added a MINIMUM of $60 to the price of a roundtrip, provided to pay for it when you book it. Oh, and the "OnLine Convenience Fee" of $8 unless you buy it at the airport. Wait until you do an online checkin and the price goes up another $10 or so. And God forbid you wait and print your boarding pass at the airport, another $5.
And pray that when you are away, just hope that your return flight doesn't get changed or cancelled. If so, you will get a standby on another flight, whenever that is. No compensation, no hotel, no nothing since they do not subscribe to the "240 Rule" thing. And don't even think that they will try to put you on another airline since no other airline works with them.
I live here close to Spirit's main hub in Ft. Lauderdale Florida but would be scared to death to fly that airline other than a short one-way outbound flight. Yes, for example, I can "save" $100 on the base price on a flight from here to Jamaica or some other locaitons in the Caribbean. But as soon as I add $60 for the rollerbag, online fee and whatever else I have to pay, it makes much more sense, IMO, to pay the extra up front and fly JetBlue out of Ft Lauderdale or American out of Miami. At least I won't get stranded on a trip or vacation if there is a problem and I won't have to sit sideways in the seat or have my knees pressed up against my chin.
Just my opinion.

I just don't get this airline. By the time I figure in taxes, etc. it really doesn't end up being much cheaper than American. Am I missing something?? (I could travel with a tiny backpack so I am not adding luggage.)

What taxes
By law ALL taxes are included in the final and/or advertised price @:-)
Haven't seen any F/T $88 All In fares on DFW-SAN on AA. NK had them for September for Tuesday Wednesday travel (haven't checked if they still do).
If you can travel with "personal item," live with "pre-reclined" seats (non reclining) and not ear any miles then it may be OK. As soon as I find that kind of price at a t time I can fly I'm going to try Spirit out myself.

In regards to the "No hotel, no nothing" comment. I have had 2 Spirit flights canceled on me. Both times, I got hotels and food and transportation comped. First time was in Lima Peru. Got transportation to and from the Sheraton downtown and food coupons for all meals at the Sheraton. Second time was a flight cancellation in FLL. Again, got transportation to and from a Marriott suites property and food also comped. Of course, if you live near your departing city and your departing flight is canceled, then they will likely give you nothing.

You can fit a lot of stuff into a decent sized backpack. But if you have extra luggage and stuff then the price is probably going to be comparable to other airlines. But the base, no-frills price is often very very low. The $16.99 fee that is often charged (each way) unless you book at the airport is ridiculous, but Spirit is all about fees. I mean, they wouldn't be profitable selling a bunch of $1-10 flights without collecting a ton in extra fees. Some of those fees are deceptive or tough to avoid, but for someone traveling light and non-stop, I'd recommend Spirit in a lot of cases.

Then I stand corrected.
I was just basing my comments on what I have read on other sites regarding peoples' frustration with Spirit Air. I've only flown them about 3 times in the past 10 years. I personally have never had any major problem with them other than the legroom is non-existant (ok, I am 6'2") unless I pay the extra $50-$100 each way to move up to the "Big" seats in the front and the extra $30 or more to slide my rollerbay in the overhead. At least in my situation, I generally find it cheaper overall to fly Jet Blue, Southwest or Delta and at least get a modicum of customer service, a soda and that little bag of peanuts or pretzels .... lol.
