Besides you are handsome and your mum is beautiful.... there might be a few other reasons:

1. J is oversold and nobody in J are AA/MPC members except you.
2. Y is oversold and they had to op-up MPC elites from Y to J, who then needed your seats... you were then op-up to F...
3. Last-min equipment change. F was sold as J.

but seriously, why would KA suddenly give you an upgrade... loading for KA489 is always bad

Did it happen to be your mum's birthday on day of travel?

KA489 from TPE to HKG? Basically it's operated by 333 (3 cabin aircraft but only sold as J and Y fare) . Most of time F class is not for sale. In my experience, you can request the F seats with GA or via online check-in. Same case if you try CAN-HKG routes.

Did you get your BP in F class?

I have some senior management of KA visiting me Tuesday, they still think they have superior premium seats and that premium passengers dont mind being herded onto buses at HKG to board well out of date planes, should be an interesting meeting
