France - Restaurant help needed - 7th arrondissement

We are a family of 4 with two teens currently staying in the 7e near the Ecole Militaire metro. After our first few days, we've not found many good restaurants in the area, so I'm hoping for some recommendations. We are looking for simple bisto/brasserie fare, inexpensive to moderate would be best - for lunch and/or dinner. Our younger child is not a very adventurous eater and prefers to stick to pasta dishes or pizza (not yet converted to french food), and although those aren't a necessity, places that serve those or poulet/steak frites make things easier. Simple, classic french fare would be our preference. Now that I think of it, if there are recommendations for great boulangeries/patisseries in the neighbourhood, we'd love to hear about those too!

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Ones I very much enjoyed and had researched pre-trip were Cafe Constant, Firmin le Barbier, Au Petit Sud Ouest and Restaurant Mariette. The reviews of the last three, some with pictures, are on my TA page here (http://www.tripadvisor.ca/members/tcook052) should you care to read through them.

I really sought out a small bistro experience and all delivered wonderful meals and ambiance, warm, friendly service though at around EUR 70 for me for a full meal including wine & dessert couldn't call it cheap. To me however it was well worth it as all were superb meals that were a highlight of the trip and you can't put a pricetag on memories.

La Fourchette, the fork, dining reservation website is very good and used it to both research and make reservations.

Café des Officiers across from Ecole Militaire might be an option for you. Has your youngest tried a croque monsieur yet? That might be a first step toward conversion. ;)

For pizza/pasta in the area, the Gusto Italia restaurants are pretty good. There's one on rue Amelie between rue St. Dominique and rue de Grenelle, and there are two others kitty-corner to each other at the intersection of rue de Grenelle and rue Augereau.

Here are some ideas that might be a bit out of date as I haven't been around the 6th/7th in a while.

For food on the Italian side, the chain Bistro Roman is one that my French friends favor. They have a variety of food, including simple things for picky eaters. I remember being taken to the location off the Champs Elyssees, but there must be one closer to the 7th.

In the square in front of St Germain des Pres (walkable from most of the 7th) there are several steak/frites places that have fixed prix meals which are very reasonable. Appetizer choices include simple salads as well as more distinctive French fare.

A bit further into the 6th, there's a simple food outpost of the famous restaurant Jacques Cagna. It's called Brasserie d'en Face and when I've been there, has always been packed with French people. Expect things for the kids plus French classics for the parents in a setting with lots of bare wood.

A classic fine dining seafood restaurant in the 7th is le Divellic (spelling?). For many years, they've had two Michelin stars. This could be a treat if the kids will eat simple but extremely well prepared fresh fish.

BTW, from the thread title, I thought you were a restaurant owner trying to hire some employees.

Nothing is really cheap in Paris wealthiest arrondissement. Some suggestions still:

Le Troquet: very good menu du jour at EUR 30.

Alain Millat: famous for his confitures, but also now for his restaurant, with a talentuous English chef.

Le Café de Mars: solid (but nothing extraordinary), with typical bistro atmosphere

La Gauloise, elegant brasserie. Not so cheap.

Antre amis. Smart neo bistrot.

"Nothing is really cheap in Paris wealthiest arrondissement. " and i've been staying in the 6th all this time cause i thought it the wealthiest.

"we've not found many good restaurants in the area" i love this line, followed by....a good restaurant serving pasta and pizza. in my youth, i refused to eat any cheese other than Velveeta.

send the kids to dc. lots to see, perfect food for them.

Me too as there is a great deal of "good retaurants" in that area, so many I couldn't get to all I wanted during my 10 day stay. Then again I researched online and read tons of reviews and had a shortlist of 6 or 8 restaurants & bistros I wanted to try before arriving rather than relying on luck once there.

Another classic cheap place (a student hangout traditionally, probably ever since it was first mentioned in the Let's Go Europe books) right on the border between the 6th and 7th is Cafe des Beaux Arts, IIRC located on the corner at (9?) rue des Beaux Arts. It's French food, but should have salad and steak/frites, etc.

If the kids are teenagers and will eat simply prepared fish, this could be a treat for the family. I wouldn't suggest it for younger children, but by age 13, a kid should be able to behave in a restaurant.

There are also many mediocre restaurants in this area, so relying on luck can be very hit or miss; in addition, many of the restaurants around here are closed right now for summer vacation.

One of my favorites is Brassiere Aubergine. Excellent rustic French food. Wonderful service. Small in size - easy to walk by it. Really enjoy it every time I'm in Paris.
