US Airways Dividend Miles - When do silver benefits kick in?

I am 2 segments away from Silver status.
From 9/8 till 9/16 I am going on vacation (domestic) and would like to not pay baggage fees. I have not yet bought the tickets for this flight.
From 8/27 though 8/31 I am traveling for work to Houston. I don't care about baggage fees since I just expense them. (2 segments each way)
Can I buy my vacation flights now and not have to pay baggage fees after I become silver on 8/27 or do I need to wait till I actually have silver status to book the flights?

IIRC, you can book now and your BPs should reflect Silver when you fly, assuming you have 30+ segments at the time.
Benefits will kick in soon after you cross that threshold. You might want to check looking at better seats after you qualify (if that is desired).

So even if the next trip was booked when I wasn't Silver, but I become Silver before actually traveling, I will get those benefits when I do actually fly?

Yes. Worst case is that you have to call and have the agent delete and re-enter your FF number. Otherwise what you said above is correct.

Also, if you fly on 8/27, there is a good chance your segments will post and you will get the free bag on 8/31. Possibly an upgrade if it posts quickly and you call to ensure you're on the list (assuming one's available).
Anything after 8/31 for sure you will be good to go on.
