Speedos are okay but boardshorts are more common. This is true over most of asia. Nobody will make a fuss about speedos, unlike the USA, but you will just not see many wearing them.

Why ladies over the world wear sexy swimwear, but men these horrible and unhygienic shorts ?

Please enlighten me ! I know it is not just an US thing.

One poster suggests it is because men don't want to show something is "too small" - I like to look at it in all shapes and sizes anyway.

Oddly enough, I talked to Thai women in the 30+ age range and they actually prefer men in speedos as opposed to boardshorts

isn't it funny how it's Americans who are so UPTIGHT about bodies and Speedos? :-( life is way too short....

also, I am looking at the Golden Banana hotel in Siem Riep for a few days while touring the temples...

I would disagree - I felt speedos were the norm for most of Asia..

I am very curious as to how board shorts are un-hygenic?

The trend in California for both males and females seems to be more coverage. I'm seeing more and more rash guards and even board shorts on girls this year at Newport and Huntington Beach than I ever have.

The un-hygenic comes from men who wipe their hands on their pants after eating etc.. France, in fact, prohibits shorts in their swimming pools for this reason. They actually make you wear a speedo.

And yes, so true about the trend towards more coverage. Dont really know why.

All I can say is that in a pool full of 10 's, the ones wearing a speedo would the ones on my must cruise list. An 11 in boardies would not get a listing let alone a look in

I stayed at the Golden Banana and while it's not exclusively gay, it's owned by a gay dutch guy and most of the staff are gay -- very gay friendly, and speedos are definitely okay here.

I had a wonderful tuk-tuk driver who has since obtained a tour guide license and I've referred him to a few friends who have all come back raving about him. If you're interested, PM me and I'll send you the deets.

Thanks for this feedback! I was contemplating the Golden Banana for a stay of 4 days, and your reply just confirmed my selection. And thanks for the Speedo comment...lol :-)

This will be my 1st trip to Siem Riep, so much looking forward to it.

Also, I am going to get a regular room versus the B&B style. Of course A/C is a must. I am planning on being in SEP December 16-20th.

I lived in east and southeast asia for many years. Men's speedo are very acceptable in there, unlike in the U.S.
