has anyone used the new Baseline feature called the CX? You can check it out on this video.

I am just wondering if you are able to "compress" part way down instead of locking it back into its original size. From the video it just seems like "all or none" type system. The same as what Samsonite currently has. Like this one.

Anyone try it yet?

I have so much Briggs & Riley I don't need any more right now! wish I had the excuse. However I intend to stay with B & R for anything else I need in the future so I checked into the new "squash it down" CX system that became available two or three weeks ago.
Of the two previous "expandable" options, the "expandable" was just a zip-out expansion and not my favorite. The alternative "one touch" expansion system was always my choice of the two types. The one touch gave more expansion, and a more solid expansion mechanism.
So far as I can tell the new CX system looks the same as the one touch system, just ratcheted to allow intermediate stop points to be selected and held to the level you want to expand the whole suitcase - instead of the old one touch system which was pretty much all the available expansion, or nothing. Overall the new models just introduced are lighter, too.

So it is true then. I can simply expand as much as I want to and not squash that thing down like in the video. is this correct?
Also digressing a bit here, how does the exterior size compare to the existing one-touch 22 inch carry on (assuming you have this bag)?
Thank you for the reply.

Yes. Looking at the video the expansion mechanism inside the suitcase looks just like the one touch, except it has the horizontal lines. I think the point of the video on the website is to show that first you expand it fully, fill the suitcase, then when you've put everything into it that you want, you "Squish" the suitcase back down again and the ratchets catch at a point to suit however much of the expansion you actually used.
I can't speak for the 22inch because travelling pretty much all internationally, the maximum suitcase I will ever purchase for carryon is 20". 20" in B & R is an internal not external measurement. External B & R is IME at least 1 inch bigger, sometimes even a little more than that. With the spinner I haven't tested yet but think the increase to accommodate the wheels might be up to 2inches. So I wouldn't go with a 22in ever unless I planned to check it.

yes, above is how it works. i was looking at the bag at travel outfitters in chandler, az.
you can expand it fully, then basically push down to the lowest available level of the rachet.
there were a few other differences:
the handle grip
the outside pocket really opens up now. because of the potential to expand the bag, i kind of like the older flatter version.
the inside compression strap is adjustable.
it also seems like their models sizes are slightly different.
i think i'll replace my older 20wide with this new model.

Actually that's not what I am getting at. My question is: Can I expand fully, then, bring it down only part way, say just 1 inch?

I have a baseline, it is all on nothing regarding the expansion and then compressing back down. You can't go halfway. When you expand it, it locks in place, when you compress again it locks in place again, there is nothing inbetween. I have a large bag (27") as I check a bag always and I can get 12 days worth of clothes shoes, toiletries, etc in the suitcase without expanding and still keep it at 50 lb. I find I just use the expansion on an international trip when I can pack to 70 lb......

On these new baselines, you can expand it 2inches and push it down 1 inch if thsts all you need. You basically push it down until it touches your clothes and the closest ratchet point.

OK. I get it now.
Emeraldcity is presumably referring to the 2012 model and jaws revenge is referring to the new CX models. And, yes, you answered my question. "part" expansion and compression was what I needed. I just need to justify to my wife that I need another carry on bag. Or if she doesn't notice it, sell the existing one on Ebay to replace with the new CX Baseline.... hoping she won't notice....
