United MileagePlus (Consolidated) - UA C vs. QR F
Aug 6, 12, 4:36 pm
With the count down to book QR award tickets nearing it's finale, I just scored (ticketed, confirmed and visible to QR in their system) tickets for next spring. We'll be traveling IAD-DOH-SEZ. IAD-DOH is in F and DOH-SEZ is in C.
My experience upfront has been limited to mostly domestic F on UA and a very few TATL C flights on UA. The same is true for Ms BearDown.
Ms BearDown doesn't travel as much as I do, but she LOVES! a good upgrade. I haven't told her about the tickets yet and I don't want to oversell the experience. But, I'm totally geeked about this ticket. Is there any reason to believe that this won't be the best flight we've ever flown?

Uh....QR doesn't have F on the IAD-DOH leg.

Sorry. Rookie mistake. Posted too fast. On the way there it's IAD-LHR (UA F) LHR-DOH (QR F) and DOH-SEZ (QR C). Coming home is all C.

Ah...better. Yes, QR F on that route is quite nice. Though I'm surprised you saw it online. You sure the QR flight is in F - I've never seen UA show QR F availability online?

I never thought I would ever have to make a choice between my favourite and always-very-good-to-me United Airlines and another airline. Since I moved to Kathmandu (Nepal) last year, I did everything possible to keep my much-valued Global Services status and continued enjoying United's customary experience on the phone, on the ground and in the air, by doing many thousands of miles DEL-EWR and BKK-NRT-SFO. Occasionally slipping in Thai Airways to Bangkok and Indonesia to stay within the *Alliance family. I must confess, that for much lower cost and shorter times to get to my destinations in Europe and the USA, I opted a few times for the Qatar Airways 'Doha Connection' to Geneva and Chicago. A few trips in business class resulted in an envelope today with my Qatar Privilege Club Gold Card. So, my friends do I switch to QR with the perks that come with being a QR top tier elite member, and soon-to-be a One World Emerald member? Or do I stick with and remain loyal to United that I have the fondest experiences with, as a Million Miler and GS member? Be reminded that I live in Nepal where QR flies in and out 4x/day. Am awaiting your recommendations, pros and cons. Thanks so much.

I'd stick with UA, and book where possible the newly announced TK flights on 016 stock.
QR has some issues with redemption, even if their soft experience is one of the best ever, and not being in an alliance is a problem.
TK is in *A, and from KTM-IST, all of EU/Eastern North America is one stop away. QR only flies into JFK or IAD.

Depends what you value. If you want the lowest cost or most convenient itinerary then just decide trip-by-trip what makes the most sense for you. None of the Gulf carrier frequent flyer programs are all that great so if it is FF perks you are looking for, then I would probably stick with what you know. There are still so few options to North America on Gulf carriers and good luck trying to actually use the miles.
QR only flies into JFK or IAD.
They also fly to ORD

I'd assume OP flies paid premium classes based on GS status.
In that case, I'd fly QR and credit miles to AA (once QR joins OW).

not being in an alliance is a problem. Not for much longer though.

... Since I moved to Kathmandu (Nepal) last year, ...is this short term -- a year or two, or longer?

QR flies to IAH as well.
