It's not a very big park. The ferry departs from the northwestern edge.

I took a backpack and bottle of water with me when I went in June. The water was in a side pouch of the backpack, I just put the whole thing through the screening machine with no issues.
But I was there for an event, so perhaps they let us slide... We were able to avoid the bulk of the line :p

Yep, you are going to stand in that long line like forEVER!
I took a friend there, but we ended up left the line and went to take the Staten Island ferry instead. It's FREE. The boat passed by the Statue of Liberty, so I took a picture of him with the Statue of Liberty in the background. :-)

Yeah. I was in Battery Park on Saturday morning and the queue for the statue ferry was wrapping all the way around the park onto Battery Place almost to Washington Street. It looked like a very long, hot wait.

Me too as I have a small Eddie Bauer bag for camera, guide book & maps, etc. with a water bottle pocket on the outside and I just put it through the machine without issue.
FWIW I enjoyed Ellis Island far more than Liberty Island though the latter is so iconic it's well wroth the visit. Enjoy your visit. :)
