3 former Tory ministers have attacked the Coalition for their opposition to a third runway at LHR.

Also 1 of them has says he likes the idea of a 'Heathsted' Hub where Heathrow takes all flights to North America, South America and Africa whilst Stansted takes all the Europe and Asia flights. He says Crossrail would be able to link the airport's in under an hour.

Stupid idea in my opinion. Heathwick would be much easier and if they were going to pump loads of investment into STN then might as well make STN the main hub for the UK and build 3 or 4 runways there.

Yet another candidate for the book of silly ideas on how to solve airport expansion in the London area.

Exactly my thought

there seems to be countless ideas for solving the airport capacity crisis

However that is all they are ideas, nothing is ever enacted on and so the problem continues with a couple of new ideas every week which need 'consideration'

I don't like the idea of 2 hub airports either. But of all the existing airports in London, Stansted is the only one that can realistically be expanded to the sort of scale that is needed (i.e: at least 3 full length runways, with 24 hour operations).

It's also not too far fetched to build a high-speed line off HS1, along the M11 corridor, which would greatly improve access.

Its more extreme than 2 hubs like what NY has.

It would basically be merging 2 airports into one large hub operating on two sites sort of like universities do with their college campuses.

Similar to what Montreal tried to do which ended disastrously.

Mirabel was a bit more complex than that. Lots of other factors that contributed to its demise:

Rail link was never built
Motorway (Autoroute 50) that was to link it to the Ottawa-Gattinau region was never finished
General decline in air traffic due to longer range jets that didn't require a stopover point between US and Europe, and Toronto overtaking Montreal as Canada's economic capital, meant that the existing airport was sufficient

Its extremely stupid that the Canadian Government spent all that money on a new airport but not the money on building the necessary transport links. Maybe instead of shutting the airport except to cargo planes they could have just got on with the rail link and motorway and it could work now.

Its like building a car park in the middle of a lake with no bridges or causeways.
