According to Seatguru, bassinet seats in 787 business class are in row 1 and row 7. However, when doing online seat selection on the JAL website, all the seats are marked as "Suitable seat for passenger with two infants".

I'm assuming this is a glitch and I should still call in to request bassinet seats...

You meant the seats with baby bottles in it on the seat selection page? They only meant both you and your neighbor can have an infant traveling with you and sit in those seats. For safety reasons, JAL does not allow passengers traveling with infants sitting in some adjacent seats.

The text below from the seat selection page explains that

For safety reasons, seat assignment for passengers traveling with infants in adjacent seats is restricted. Basically, one infant is permitted in adjacent seats. However, two infants can be accommodated in adjacent seats displayed with baby bottle mark.

If no seats available displayed with baby bottle mark when you are traveling with two or more infants, please select either across the aisle in the same row or seats in another row.

Definitely call to get the basinet seats if you don't want to hold your babies during the entire flight :p

Thanks. I called and they were able to confirm bassinet seats for all except one flight (NRT-BOS). IN checking the seat map, it seems like a bunch of seats are listed as Unavailable versus Already Assigned. Do you know what the distinction is? Are there some seats that are blocked for special purposes (12 of the seats are Unavailable and most the others are Already Assigned)?

JAL blocks seats according to status, booking class, etc. There are also seats blocked for codeshare partners. You can request for those seats at check-in.

Got it. Thanks! Does being OW Emerald help unblock these before check-in?

You can try but I believe the online seat selection page on JAL website has taken that into account already assuming you have your FFP entered.

This is my first time flying JAL, and although I haven't been on the plane yet, I've been pretty impressed by their customer service. They noted my request for bassinet seats and even though it couldn't be confirmed immediately they called me back to confirm that it had been done. Also, they actually called me back after a dropped call!

This is opposed to UA, where there's almost never any direct followup on phone calls or emails. Also, dropped calls are never responded to...

I have no elite status on JAL, though I am a OW Emerald. I wonder if this has anything to do with it, or if JAL treats all their customers this way.

They do treat all of their customers this way. Back then when I had no status, they also promptly replied my call after investigation and asked me to give them a chance to fix the reservation problems with my dishonest travel agent (yea it's not even their problem)

Wait until they call you to tell you that your departure time has changed by 5 minutes. :D

I hate that when they change the schedule by 5 minutes and my online seat selection function got disabled. I usually just call them proactively so I can check my seat map again :p

Is there an iPhone app that you use to do this, or are you referring to doing it on the JAL website?

JAL website

Got it. By the way, if this is helpful for others, I found that once the request was put into the system for bassinet seats, I was unable to click into the seat map for even viewing with the My Reservations options.

You sure the schedule hasn't changed? :p

What's the status of your flight when log in to view your reservation on JAL website? Does it say "confirmed" or something else?

It says confirmed, and then notes *1*2 under special arrangement and doesn't let us pick seats. I guess it makes sense but it was kind of fun looking at the seat map earlier. The only other way I've been able to look at seat maps is by pulling a mock booking.

That's good to know. If you really want to view the seat map without doing a dummy booking, you can sign up for expertflyer. Viewing seat maps is free. :)

Just curious, does it still allow you to enter other special arrangements online such as special meal request online?
