Im leaving my suitcase at the airport, going downtown for the night with a backpack only.

Is this next week or later? (This week a tunnel is closed and it would be rather complicated to do this by train.)

If this is on or after August 14th, then there's a direct train from Terminal 4 (if you arrive at a different terminal then you can take a free shuttle bus to T4) to Pirámides station... but the last train leaves at ... OK, last direct train leaves at 10:28pm, so that probably won't work.

There are 3 later trains, 11:28pm to Chamartín (in this case, switch at Chamartín to line C10 to Pirámides) or 10:58pm / 00:15 to Atocha (in this case you can switch to C10 at any station between Chamartín and Atocha. I would imagine that switching at Recoletos would be the easiest option as it's the smallest station.)

The ticket would be 2,40€ and here's the map (http://www.renfe.com/viajeros/cercanias/madrid/mapa_zonas_madrid.html).

Thank you.

This is what I found as well, but the airport web site stated the last train was 12:15. Thank you for confirming. I arrive on the 20th.

Any tips on getting to the luggage storage in Terminal 4?
I'll be landing at 4S.

Yes, last train is at 12:15 (00:15) to Atocha, but that one is probably too late to catch the connection to Pirámides... In any case, the 10:58pm or 11:28pm should work out.
When landing at T4S you will pick up luggage at T4. Once you exit from luggage pickup, the left-luggage office is on the same floor, just go left... it's almost at the end of the terminal. Here's some info from the airport website (http://www.aena-aeropuertos.es/csee/Satellite?Language=EN_GB&c=ServiciosDe_FP&cid=1050046380959&p=1049727006301&pagename=Estandar%2FServiciosDe_FA%2FPopUpMasInfo&site=MAD).

You have numerous public transport options other than Renfe Cercanias from Terminal 4 (especially since you will not have heavy luggage).
I'd take EMT bus 200 from Terminal 4 (destination on bus - Avenida de America) and alight at Canillejas metro stop (you can't miss it: lots of people are likely to get off at this stop). It's not far from the airport so be careful not to miss it! From there Line 5 will take you directly to Piramides. From memory, the last 200 leaves at just after 11.30pm (check EMT Madrid website for details); the metro runs much later, until 1.30am at the earliest. Even at these times, public transport in Madrid is, in my opinion, safe.

Yes, bus + metro is another option...
I guess it's not the option that I would choose because it's probably not any faster than taking the train (the bus takes a while to leave the airport as it stops in the other terminals, then on the metro it's direct but at least 30 min and about 20 stops) and you'd have to stop and buy a metro ticket (plus I'd rather not walk over the highway in the evening, even though it's safe and all - but that's just me).

Just in case, it's 1,50€ bus + 2€ metro.
