Not sure where else to ask this question, but figured I would start here. I am looking to fly from Bangkok to Mae Hong Son. It appears that Nok Air is the only carrier (that I can see) to fly there. The problem I am running into is that on their website, I cannot book directly from Bangkok to HGN (via CNX). I have to have separate bookings from DMK to CNX and from CNX to HGN.

Anyone have any ideas or ways around that? It ends up being around $217 r/t the current way.

Much appreciated!

That's what Nok & AAsia do - point to point. Well, there's the train from Hualamphong Station. I don't know when your CNX-HGN flight is, but I like the overnight, which leaves around 10pm and get in around noon or 1pm. Don't know how much it was (gf paid), but it's pretty cheap. + you save on the hotel that night. Leave some wiggle room - Thailand ain't Switzerland. They've got some faster trains in the morning too. Do some Googling, something may work out. wj

I'll have to keep digging around and see what options work best. Thought about the train, but then having a 5-6 hour drive up to Mae Hong Son is a bit wearying just thinking about it! :D

Oh well....thanks for the info though!

Get a sleeper and crash. Why can't you then fly from CNX to HGN ?

Yeah, I'm thinking about it. I'll be traveling with other people, so I need to float the options. My OP was really just to clear up the "who flies where, and why do you have to have two bookings", which you answered. Now it's just a matter of picking the lesser of two semi-evils! :p

On a random date I'm seeing CNX-HNG at 1400 THB base fare, so the $217 total r/t appears pretty accurate in terms of what you'll expect for 2 segments each way. You're not going to find a cheaper flight.

If cost is a consideration, and there's a few of you, then you might want to look into hiring a van to drive to HGN or simply renting a car. It's a very nice, but windy, road.

Fly from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son.... it's a lovely (relatively) untainted town.

Fly also from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. There are 5 airlines to choose from (but remember 2 different airports from Bangkok)

I like the day train muuuuuuuuch more than the night train. 2nd class fan train makes for a great (but long) day. Why anyone would take a night train is beyond me, rooms are cheap enough to not need to 'save a night.'

A friend of mine recommended the night train as you can sleep most of the night and wake up when the sun is rising while you are still in the mountains. Again, purely for the adventure.

Like I mentioned before, I'll put an update here with my decision....and maybe some pictures ;-)

i dont mind the night train too. 1st class sleepers sell out early so go and buy the ticket in advance a few days. i don't know how far in advance you can book but you most likely won't get one within 24 hours of departure IME, they will be sold out by then.
