I was flying from EWR to BWI and my flight 4846 was cancelled last night. Does anyone know why it might have been cancelled? I drove from EWR to BWI to get home and it was clear skys the whole way. Also is there any chance United will give me credit for the mile? Without this flight segment I am 26 miles short for Gold.

According to ExpertFlyer it was weather
The flts to/from EWR and BWI tend to cancel a lot. Especially in the summer when there are evening thunderstorms (or the threat of) in the EWR area.
I have actually gotten Amtrak from the BWI station to EWR after my flts have been XLD.

1 in ~26 flights in May were cancelled, and June is sure to be higher. Crew, weather, MX, a/c shortage, you name it - no shortage of reasons.

Always a risk when flying the last trip of the day. Did you try to get rebooked on UA4235 EWR-DCA at 9:29pm? It would have given you a few more miles.

I had the option of flying to IAD around 7:30 which would have got me home later then just driving from EWR so I opted for driving. I did not think about the miles till I got home and saw I was a few miles short for gold. The last flight out was my only choice because my flight from PVG did not land till 5:30. It just surprised me that it was cancled for weather when the weather was good at both airports.

You can submit a request for Original Routing Credit since your flight was cancelled. Not sure they will honor it since you chose to drive but it's worth a shot since you will achieve Gold status with the flight.
Shoot an email to the MP Service Center. I think their address is printed on the back of your silver card.

Your aircraft #838 which had been planned for this flight was at EWR for several hours before the planned take off. So if it was weather (and expert flyer is not mistaken) and weather was clear at both EWR and BWI and airspace inbetween, it could have been that the crew scheduled to fly the flight was unable to make it to EWR because of weather or it could have been that weather was effecting ATC in a way not readily apparent, likewise it could have also been the case that weather was not fit to fly a Q300 through but could have been fine for other types of aircraft.

WAS-NYC flights are among the most unreliable, on any airline. I have had last 3 of my 5 flights canceled.

United replied and they gave me a credit of 200 miles but they don't count towards my status. I will be going back to China and India this year so I will still get gold with United but it would have nice to get it before so I could have lounge access on my next international trip.

Are all three DC airports as unreliable? For example, might I have better odds with IAD-EWR than BWI-EWR since both IAD and EWR are hubs?

I do the DCA-EWR pretty often and it has never been cancelled for me.
BWI is the worst of the DC area airports.

My friend was flying BWI-EWR-PVG on 8/11 and the first flight in the morning got delayed so much he would have missed his connection in EWR and they could only re-book him for the next day. For now on I am going to stick with ORD/LAX/SFO when I go to PVG, I think it gives you better chance of getting to your destination on the correct day.

I think you will have better luck with IAD-EWR over BWI-EWR because the IAD uses a small jet where BWI is using a prop plane.
