Where to go in West Virginia that is easily accessible by bus/train from Pittsburgh? I'm looking to do some sightseeing. I'm mainly interested in history and natural sceneries.

I've never been to either and neither one is a big tourist destination, but if you're just looking for something a little different you can search for what the attractions are and see if it seems worth it. From Washington DC (not Pittsburgh) you can take either a MARC commuter train or Amtrak to Harpers Ferry which is historic (mostly Civil War history) and maybe somewhat scenic. How easy it is to get around without a car I don't know. The New River Gorge area, much of which is national park land, is quite scenic. You can ride through it on Amtrak on the Cardinal train (http://takeatrainride.blogspot.com/2011/04/off-again-this-time-on-amtraks-cardinal.html) from Washington DC but without a car I'm not sure that there's much to do if you get off. Also the train only runs three times a week although there is also Greyhound service from the nearby town of Beckley. lsquare Aug 4, 12, 8:02 am Thanks for the information. Anyone else have any comments on Morgantown? brendog Aug 6, 12, 11:32 am Thanks for the information. Anyone else have any comments on Morgantown? It's a medium-sized college town (University of WV). There's a few decent restaurants and micro-breweries. The general vicinity is moderately scenic, but definitely not spectacular. WV, in general, is not very public-transit friendly due to the low population density. Pretty much the only reason to go to WV is for outdoor activities (Hiking, climbing, kayaking, et al), and a car is definitely necessary. |
