At the recommendation of both a friend and the concierge at the Sheraton Carlsbad (who was excellent, by the way), we headed down to Solana Beach for lunch at a restaurant called Claire's. The place is on north Cedros across from the train station and is only open for breakfast and lunch.
All I can say is WOW. Probably the best lunch I have had anywhere, and maybe one of the best meals overall. My wife had an asparagus omelet and I had the green scrambler. We could not believe how good an egg dish could be or how unique compared to your basic omelet or scrambled eggs. We arrived about 12:40 pm and did have about a 20 minute wait, but they have a very nice patio and the time went quickly. Atmosphere is very casual, seating comfortable, service excellent, and prices very reasonable. What more could you want? No wonder it was really crowded.

Not quite as spectacular but also excellent was a Japanese restaurant in Carlsbad called Nozomi's. The best part was the remarkably fresh sushi. The best we've had since a trip a few years ago to Hawaii. Everything else was really good, too.
