I have an award ticket that I will no longer be using this Friday. I have no status. I know I can cancel, pay $150 and have the miles recredited. This is a one way award for 10K miles so that $150 is better to me than the miles. I also know I can pay $50 and change the ticket to another route, date etc...My question: Is it possible to change the ticket, without having the new trip details to be determined later or must this be established now? If possible how is this done.
Thanks
If I was United I would just cancel and notify them 4 days later.

You can change the date for free as long as it's more than 21 days in advance (of the new date) and the origin & destination remain the same. If you intend to use this later on for the same o&d, then just find availability for a date way out in the future and move it there. Then later you can move it to the date you want..and as long as there is always at least 21 days between when you make the change and the date you fly there won't be any fee.

Thanks for the info. The current award was a postioning flight that I wont be needing, so I will be changing the origin and destination. I assume I'd pay $50 to change (do as you say book for way out) and then change again once I have my new dates?

Interesting. I thought $50 would be the fee for Premier Silver to change the origin OR destination. Can you really change both for $50? I thought that would require the fee to be charged twice.
Do the changed cities have to require the same number of miles, and be in the same zone region, etc.?

Yes you're right on the amount of the fee.. it will be $75 for the OP since he's got no status. But you can change both the origin and destination for the $75..they won't charge it twice as long as it's done at the same time. The mileage award level must be the exact same as what was booked originally.

Great tip to change award ticket. I used to pay $125 to redeposit miles each time I need to change my flight.
May I ask if I can (with/without pay) to change departure day of my return part of award ticket once I already used the first half of ticket. Of course, O/D remain the same. Thanks!

Yes you can and it's free as long as you change it to a date that's more than 21 days out. If inside 21 days there's a fee.

Thanks! It seems UA will charge $50 for fee if within 21 days. It is acceptable comparing CO would charge me $400 when I used paid ticket (S fare + miles/cash upgrade) last summer to HKG and asked for day change on my return flight to EWR. I now think award ticket is more flexible to me.
