bmi diamond club - BAA WorldPoints - 1,500 DC miles on sign up for a £10 spend

Raffles has posted news of an offer on Head for Points of 1,500 DC miles (or free miles for other FF programmes - see the below link for more details) on opening up a new BAA WorldPoints account.

When I opened an account this morning, the welcome email also offered a further 100 WorldPoints for updating your travel and shopping preferences in your online account.

The link to the blog post is here (http://headforpoints.com/2012/08/01/baa-worldpoints-promotional-code/).

Am I correct in thinking you need to spend a small amount to receive the points ?

Ie you need to be at a baa airport and swipe the points card when buying something ?

Ten pounds must be spent, but Raffles notes that tickets purchased on the Heathrow Express website seem to qualify for this promotion (T&Cs specifically exclude purchases at kiosks, on train, etc.). There is a separate promotion mentioned on the BAA page for double points for Miles & More members that specifically excludes HEX online purchases; no similar exclusion is mentioned for earning the 1000 bonus WorldPoints.

As I see no exclusion in the T&Cs for Americans, HEX tickets purchased are good for three months, the promotion does not end until 9/30, and I have a London trip planned for December, I think it's time for me to join WorldPoints! The only question would be whether the bonus kicks in at the time of purchase or time of use, and I could not find that answer in the T&Cs.

Raffles also notes that there have been two promotions recently offering a 100% bonus on conversions to Avios so although you could earn 1500 DC miles through this promotion, if your interest is in converting to Avios, it might be worthwhile to hold onto the WorldPoints to see if the promotion is repeated because a transfer under the bonus would provide 2400 Avios.

One of the commenters observed that there's also a 100 point bonus for updating shopping and travel preferences.

It should be stressed, that another option would be that the bmi route disappears, and the only route is converting to Avios at the lower rate and without a bonus before point expiry.

500 WP > 750 DC > 750 Avios.
therefore 1000 WP goes to 1500 Avios via DC.

250 WP > 300 Avios.
therefore 1000 WP goes direct to only 1200 Avios directly.

Personally, I think a bonus probably would come during the period, but it is certainly not guaranteed.

And indeed, assuming you get up to 250 WP above the 1000 - i.e. 100 from updating shopping preferences plus 150 further from spending (and you will be on double points briefly, so the £10 will get you at least 20 of them), then direct to Avios with the lower hurdle of 250 required for redemption would be a route out for surplus (everyone should have atleast 120 surplus).

I actually wrote that tickets for the Heathrow Express MAY qualify! No guarantee that it will, but of course you don't lose anything by trying as long as you were going to book a ticket anyway.

If you can't swipe your card - but instead give them the card number at the counter (or email them later with the receipt), will you still get the bonus? The T&C specifically mention swiping card at the till, hence wondering.

Sorry if I was a little unclear in attempting to convey that your post made the HEX ticket online purchase a possible, but not certain qualifying purchase under this promotion (I think you also mentioned the uncertainty about whether purchase versus use would trigger the bonus). I take little for granted in the miles (specifically in this case, Avios) game. The T&Cs leave open the possibility that purchasing a HEX ticket in an attempt to qualify for this promotion might be worthwhile, even if my plans fell through or even if it is use, rather than purchase, that triggers the bonus. After all, if everything worked out (including another 100% WorldPoints to Avios transfer bonus), it's possible that a ten-pound purchase (if the right HEX code comes along before September 30) might result in 2400 Avios. Even with the current 30% purchase bonus, 2100 Avios would cost approximately 50 pounds. That's an angle well worth playing at a cost low enough that if I receive nothing, I should have no complaints.

By the way, wonderful blog--well written, very straightforward. I'm becoming a regular reader.

Just go and pick someone up from the airport and have a coffee while you are waiting for them.

The car park and coffee will easily come to £10, if not, grab a bag of crisps from M+S or a magazine from WHS.

No need to be airside, pretty much all spend at any BAA airport counts.

Having somehow managed to avoid this for many years, and now having a trip to LHR coming up in a few days I've signed up.

A question on getting worldpoints for the Heathrow Express online - how does one do that? Going to a booking I got all the way through to the screen to enter card details without having the chance to enter my worldpoints number, is it post payment (a little unusual) or do I have to log into my account?

The T & Cs state that the £10 must be within one transaction, not across multiple...so that's either a lot of coffee or an extra few minutes in the car park.

Interesting, I will have a think about that.

I have only credited to BA in the past, so DC should be ok for me, but Mrs P has credited to both BAEC and DC so I guess Avios.com is her only option.

You don't think they match on address?

My Mrs bought something recently in Harrods at T5. She handed over her WP card but when swiped it showed on the receipt as a Harrods Rewards swipe. The WP posted, but nothing toHarrods. I went into Harrods and showed them the receipt and they could not explain how it had happened, but they were happy to add the Harrods points as well.

Any store in a BAA airport will allow you to double dip if that store has its own loyalty scheme.

Although in the example above the £10 voucher is for world duty free not Boots so doesn't apply.

Have they updated the tills in Tesco GLA near domestic arrivals to take WorldPoints yet? Last time I needed to scan receipts and email to BAA WP customer service (well every little helps!)

There was never one for any partner until BA joined last year. They then had the initial BA bonus, which I thought would be a one off to promote their joining the scheme. But then they slipped out the other one last month, so who knows?

I would hold out.

If you convert now via Bmi, you get 1,500. This offer may go away or may not.

You can always convert via BA for 1,200.

Another 100 per cent bonus with BA would get you 2,400.

Given those numbers, I would wait. The upside is better than the downside. If BMI was offering, say, 1,800 then I might transfer now but 1,500 is only 300 gained against a possible 1,200 lost.

I always found our baby useful for meeting minimum spends to use the money off coupons at Tesco, like £50 when you spend £40, £10 when you spend £80 etc, 300 points for spending £50 etc etc

Sadly those days are over for us now so just end up stocking up on pasta, toilet rolls, shampoo, razors etc.

HEx might work, if you printed the ticket at home. The travel date must be before the end of the month. I am assuming the points go on automatically after the day of travel.

A slightly cheaper thing to do would be to paypal £10 to an FT'er who treats himself to '3 for £10' Toblerones and posts you the receipt, so you can do a postal or email retroclaim!

I don't see why the focus on Heathrow, they're not going to create a separately named loyalty scheme for each of their airports and it might mean a reduction in card usage at the other airports as people won't think they're part of the scheme.

I wonder when we're going to get the BA survey talking about their FFP re-brand to "Heathrow Club"?

If anyone is sitting on the 1,000 WorldPoints in their BAA account, and may need to use them reasonably soon, they might want to consider moving them to BAEC via DC soon to earn 1,500 Avios / DC miles.

1,000 WorldPoints equates to only 1,200 Avios when transferred to BAEC directly, so unless they are transferred to BAEC during some sort of bonus, you'll lose out if you let DC close without having taken advantage of the more generous DC conversion rates.*

* As a new BAA WorldPoints member, I don't know how frequently the transfer bonuses come along. Someone may be able to advise if they are fairly frequent.

I can confirm my 1000 points just posted a couple of days after my HEX trip (ticket bought a couple of months ago). Points now transferred to M&M to get it just over the minimum requirement to then request 4x£5 BAA shopping vouchers! ^

I received the survey too, and gave them my opinion on the suggested name! Are we to have "Aberdeen Rewards", "Glasgow Rewards", and "Southampton Rewards" as well? ;)
Well, I said that as a joke, but look what's just arrived in my inbox:

As you may be aware, BAA Airports Limited (BAA) is selling Stansted Airport, the third of our airports we've been forced to sell in the last three years. As a result, we have decided to focus our loyalty programme on Heathrow Airport where the majority of our members collect their points.

We're contacting all WorldPoints members to advise that the WorldPoints programme will cease in Stansted, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Southampton Airports on 31 December 2012. You can continue to collect points at these airports up to and including 31 December 2012.

No more points for car parking at ABZ for me I guess, then. :(

Let BAA WorldPoints customer relations know what you think about it.

The example I mentioned from personal experience was if I was flying from LGW-GLA and I wanted something from the airport. I'd tend to wait until the return leg and spend in BAA owned Glasgow so I'd get the WorldPoints. Not having worldpoints in these other airports means I've no reason to favour BAA airports when buying stuff.

Also they say they were forced to sell STN, but they weren't forced to stop their loyalty scheme in their remaining airports.

Unless BAA plan to sell off the lot and just keep LHR.

I agree. Quite annoying, especially with my increased airport spend away from GLA.
By the way, it does also state:

You can collect or redeem points on pre-booked parking at Stansted, Glasgow, Aberdeen or Southampton Airports up to and including 31 December 2012 for parking up to a year from the date of booking**.

Unless BAA plan to sell off the lot and just keep LHR.Maybe the regulators think that, if they leave BAA with just LHR, perhaps BAA will be able to focus on mobilising some snowploughs the next time they're needed at LHR if we get another big dump of snow there? :D

1000 points signup bonus for £10 spend has credited 2 days after spend at LHR.

Also received a further offer of only 250 points for same spend in October. Not sure I'll bother.

Did this offer come through for the same account?

(Or are you referring to a new signup offer?)

Had a reply back from Worldpoints CS following my email complaining about the move to Heathrow Rewards...Thank you for contacting WorldPoints. We're sorry to hear you're disappointed with the decision to remove our airports with the exception of Heathrow from the WorldPoints programme and we have passed your feedback onto the WorldPoints Programme Manager.

The forced sales of Stansted and Edinburgh this year and Gatwick in 2009 has left BAA with only 4 airports from the original 7 the programme launched with. As airports have had to be removed from the programme over the years, the majority of member activity has become more and more focussed on Heathrow.

In addition, the regional airports are increasingly managing their marketing activity and retailer relationships at a local level to provide the best possible experience for their passengers, based on their knowledge of their home market. You can sign up to receive newsletters directly from our other airports at www.baa.com if you'd like to find out about their latest news, offers and promotions.

Or 750 avios if you're really quick and do this all before bmi earning ends :) You don't need your worldpoints card, when you sign up you're giving a membership number and you can scan your receipts and send them in if you're using the airport before you get your card.

I guess the reason behind the end of BAA WorldPoints is now apparent:

BAA drops name to brand airports separately (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-19944936)

They could always brand the loyalty scheme "Heathrow and friends" :)
