I will be spending 9 days with my family (end of March early April) in Waikiki area. During our time we would liketo take a number of tours. Any recommendation for tour companies to use? My kids are 17 & 15. Any suggestion for things they would like?

We had a recent positive experience with Discover Hawaii Tours.

Question, are you renting a vehicle while on Oahu? The reason I ask is that doing a tour company with four adults could be expensive if you did several tours. If you have a car, buy a book and see the sights

Yup. I have had experience with E Noa Tours, and while I've found their circle island tour to be comprehensive and interesting, I suppose I could have had the same, minus the information about film location of various US TV shows, by buying a guidebook and renting a car. I found it to be of good value for one, but for four persons, I'd say that renting a car is certainly the best option.
If you choose to go with E Noa Tours, my advice would be to seat on the right hand side of the bus (most interesting sights were on this side, and at some place there is no stop, just a drive-by) and to pack lunch. The lunch stop has very poor value in my experience (two scoops of rice and 7 (non-peeled) schrimps in hot sauce at 15$) and you could certainly save by taking sandwiches.

Tour companies to see what? I'd thinking renting a car for a couple of days would be a lot cheaper and give you much more flexibility than a tour.
Other than that, Roberts Hawaiian is the oldest and most respected of the tour companies.
