Is there any trick to getting biz and first class seats to show in mileageplus booking engine? i've tried many permutations, but only get united results
It will generally show you the options in the Partner awards section which appears on the list after any United options. What airlines are you most interested in? Some airlines do not display well (or at all) at United.com and you may have better luck calling in to book.

Iwanted to fly LH or Swiss or OS from US to FCO in biz or first. It shows only United flights for the two months I looked.

It's very possible there just aren't any award seats available.

But if I look on the Miles and More website, there are many options in OS and LZ on many different dates. Does United have limited access to Star alliance biz seats?

Try ANA's website or here: http://beta.awardtravelr.com/
If it's there, but not on United.com, call the web support desk and ask them to book it and ask them to waive the phone fee since it isn't available on United.com.

Lufthansa Alliance (OS, LX, LH and others) usually release premium inventory closer to the travel dates.

I see the points guy http://thepointsguy.com/ managed to snag an LH first class eat from Frankfurt to Miami on the day of the flight. So I guess the strategy is to book United and then switch closer to the travel day?
