Am i right in thinking that I need to be a US based MileagePlus member to spend points on hotels.
I have changed my address to a US address but still not able to book hotels.
Any ideas how I can get round this
thank you

I believe that you just need to have a chase issued co-branded credit card, which you may be precluded from getting based on either your residency/citizenship.
That said, mileage redemptions for hotel awards are typically a terrible value. In addition to the poor redemption rates, you can often only book lower room classes via United's portal. I would never use my miles in this way, FWIW.

Why would you want to us miles for hotels???? I had an extra 100,000 BA miles that i needed to use ASAP before they expired (thats a free o/w F tkts anywhere) I used the same 100K to get 2 nights at the Copacabana Palace in Rio. What a terrible value but I did not need a tkt at the time and was spending a week at that hotel anyway. I am still kicking myslf for not just getting a tkt anywehere instead
Your 2nd question. I find having my Dubai address on my MP account much better then having my NY address. They have more promotions of you live overseas

Here in Japan we get zero/zilch promotions. As a matter of fact, we were frequently locked out of promotions before, when for example double miles were offered in the U.S. but we were ineligible to sign up for.

They have no promotions for UK addresses, and often higher prices. But then, I switch my membership country fairly regularly, so that I can pay in the currency that's offering a better price.

Actually you might be right. Last year we had a bunch of promotions and this year we have had NONE. Perhaps it is when UA enters a new market which was the case with DXB (no longer)

Thank you for your responses.
I only have 19k miles and don't expect to earn many more over the next 2 years.
I needed a hotel night in Europe and thought this would be a good way to stay for free.
Any other good suggestions on how to use them. I prefer BA miles.(Avios)
