If you try to VDB, you might have a difficult time explaining to the agent why you want to stay where you are for say, several days.
That said, an agent did offer to configure my ticket for my last segment (IAD-LGA) once to be an open ticket that I could reuse at a later date if I found my own transportation to New York when I took a VDB. (It was the last flight of the night and I needed to be in New York by 9AM, so I was considering taking an overnight Amtrak train on my own dime so I could still take the bump. After a bit of consideration, I turned it down.)

well, it might not be worth it ... they might not even be oversold and the 45 min wait to see if they call anyone isn't worth it.
Plus, if I do go up for the VDB and they end up not needing me, they might flag me... ahhh screw it, I'll just jump ship at my stop and screw the greed

GREED - a desire to attain or pocess more then one deserves
I think UA probably considers using "hidden cities" to get a fare your not eligible for a form of greed in the first place. Perhaps you should have said "screw the "excessive" greed
