I am a rookie on Air New Zealand however due to large cost difference have booked seats on an airline outside of my usual alliance.

Our infant is going as lap child for an international trip however will turn 2 just before the return flight. Although we mentioned this when making the booking over the phone the agent said they could go as a lap child. I wanted to ensure we are not going to have any hassles on the return leg when our infant is just over 2 years.

I tried searching the master thread and forum however my search term of "infant" did not return this scenario. If it is there please let me know the search term so I can improve my future searches.

TIA,
E

There has been a policy change just a couple of weeks ago. In the past, infants who turned 2 on the return leg had the same discount as the outbound leg. If you haven't bought your ticket then you will be subjuct to the new policy. I think you may need to pay for a child seat on both legs.

Is the age of the infant always stringently monitored at check-in?

Internationally yes.

The update Xiaotung is referring to is here (http://www.airnzagent.co.nz/assets/agents/wingtips/July-2012/wtsp2427-16jul12.rtf) and is effective for travel ticketed on or after 24 July 2012, and says

Effective 24 July 2012 Air New Zealand’s infant travel ticketing policy will change - from this date if an infant turns 2 years of age at any point of the ticketed journey the infant must occupy a seat and purchase a child airfare where child fares are offered or an adult fare where child discounts are not offered..

The original policy can be found at this link (http://www.airnzagent.co.nz/children-and-infants) and says that Air NZ's policy was that 'Infants are defined as children under the age of 2 at date of departure.'
However, they also say that for 'interline' fares (ie fares featuring another airline as well as Air NZ), "if an infant turns 2 years old during the journey the child fare level must be charged for the entire journey."

So I would assume that providing your travel was ticketed before 24 July and Air NZ is the only carrier on the ticket, there will be no problem. If the answer to either of these points is a 'no', the travel agent appears to have booked it incorrectly (Note: I'm not a travel or reservations agent so can't guarantee my interpretation is correct.)

Fantastic - thanks to Xiaotang and nz_crew for the info. I guess my search skills on air new zealand's website are lacking as I didn't find the link provided. We ticketed earlier this year so fall into the old policy and are only flying Air New Zealand so looks like the agent was correct.

Thanks again,
E

May want to print out the relevant section on the website in case the airport personnel aren't aware of the nuances of the policy change.
