United MileagePlus (Consolidated) - Switch Business<->Economy seat halfway through the trip

I am trying to find 4 award tickets to Asia, but I only have enough miles for 2 business and 2 economy seats.

I was wondering....can we switch seats halfway through so that all 4 of us could get some sleep? Is this allowed/tolerated? does anyone have experience with this?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Depends on the cabin crew but usually not.

There used to be somewhat of an unwritten rule that you could make a switch like this once (and only once) during the flight. I don't know if it was official (doubt it) and as posted varies by flight crew. Not sure what the most recent experiences are.

While I agree, it does depend on the crew.... I have never been denied the request.

Only caveat is that I have been told by many of those (PMUA crews) who allowed me to switch, is that you are only allowed to switch once (basically, no back and forth).

Yes you'll be able to switch no problem. Just let the FA's know you're doing it.. and only do it one time.

THANKS!
Is this also true on other Star Alliance like Asian or just on United? Just wondering as this would affect my redemption strategy.

It doesn't seem like you understand the answer you were given.

The TRUE answer is it isn't allowed on UA.

The practical answer is most flight crews won't act if you switch once.
