Airlines sell fares with free or inexpensive (100-200$) change fees. The WFH fares filed by LH from the US to India for example allow changes for 250$: http://www.lufthansa.com/online/portal/wfh/us/specials?l=en&cid=1000390&sc_destination=1000267

Is this subject to availabilty in the ticketed fare class? If yes, one will have to pay the change fee and the dufference in fare.

get in touch with a local travel agent....they sometimes have some good deals on open ended return fares....
