I've been collecting HErtz ZE1 points for the last 5 years, and have amassed just a bit over 42,000 pts.

I've redeemed a few weeks of free rentals through the years...but Still have been amassing pts faster than I've needed to use car rentals that's not paid for by work.

At 2500 pts per week, that is close to 18 weeks of free rental.

Is there a better use of the pts? or would it be better to collect Air Miles instead of ZE1 for the rentals?

It depends on your rental patterns.

When the rentals are very cheap, I usually credit to Virgin Atlantic. 1000 miles plus 100 bonus as a 5 Star. (I'm 5 star). One can get 2 Hilton pts for each Virgin mile. Best part is there is no FF charge since it is a non USA based airline. I usually have a nice coupon (PC #) so that works well when my rentals are like $20-30 for a 2 day weekend after a nice fat coupon with a very low base rate.

If I am using a certain CDP code that won't allow me to credit to airlines, etc, I opt for Hertz ZE1 pts. Also, if my rental is a weekly or an expensive weekend rental (say at least $100 or more), I usually credit to Hertz ZE1 pts.

Bottom line:

1. If cheap & my CDP allows (most of my CDP codes), I credit to Virgin Atlantic. For me, 1100 Virgin pts and I can use my favorite PC coupon.

2. If expensive (say over $100) or I used a CDP code that do not allow me to credit to airline/hotel programs, I will opt for Hertz ZE1 pts.

What I do depends on the total price and what offerings are out there. Several years ago, I was getting 1800 Hertz ZE1 pts for a weekly rental. My wife had an accident and it wasn't her fault. Her insurance would not do the paperwork for the rental. Good news as we don't have to use Enterprise! :) We did 2 one week rentals at our 2 local Hertz HLE for $130ai each week and we got 1800 pts for each rental. :) We submitted the claim into the other insrance and they saved alot over the daily rate that Enterprise would charge. After doing the math, they agreed with my assessment and paid the whole car rental claim. And I was 3600 pts richer as spouses in Hertz Gold can drive for free! :) At that time, 1800 pts would give me a free 4 day weekend rental--that was before the slight devaluation with Hertz ZE1 program. It now takes 2000 pts for a 4 day weekend rental or a one week rental up to F size. Not bad.

Sorry to write a "book" but hope this helps!
