Travel with Children - Two kids: two separate strollers or one double ?

I'm doing a RTW on the 8th of August with two kids. I have a double strollers (http://www.toysrus.ca/product/index.jsp?productId=11712448), not sure if I'll run into trouble, I'm flying the following airlines and routes:

AirCanada: YOW-FRA
Lufthansa: FRA-BKK
Thai: BKK-MEL
NZ: MEL-AKL
NZ: AKL-HNL
AirCanada: HNL-YVR
AirCanada: YVR-YOW

Don't know if it makes a difference, but I'll be flying in business on all these routes.

Should I ditch the double and go for two strollers?... however, the double is more convenient, as one parent can push the stroller and the other can take care of hauling the carry-on.

I think a doublewide's wheelbase would make it difficult to navigate through many airports.

Get both adults backpacks. In fact you could probably fiqure a way to attach backpacks to each tyke's stroller as well.

Or depending on their size get baby backpacks. We traveled all over Europe with one of our kids that way.

I agree that navigation might be a problem. Not sure about the airports you mentioned but we've had to fold up our strollers to get it through security. We usually do what's suggested above. We usually have two lightweight strollers. Each parent has a backpack and we have an extra bag that we hook onto one of the strollers for things we need easy access to: snacks, toys, books etc...
We also gate check our strollers and bring the lightweight ones to make it easy for the airport people.

Another vote for two separate strollers. That double wide one will be very difficult to get through airports.

Side by side double strollers are WIDE.

My nephew has a double which has one seat in front of the other instead of side by side. They returned the side by side after an airport drill with the twins and got the front and back narrow style instead.

Trying to maneuver two separate strollers and rolling carry-ons around an airport during summer family vacation travels is only suitable for comedy sketches.
The WIDE strollers can be challenging to maneuver in older cities or cities in Asia as well.

I have three closely spaced children and our double, even though it was tandem, never got near an airport. I only used a single. I also used big backpacks, never wheely bags and a good quality (meaning to age 3) baby carrier. I admit that none were true "stroller babies" and preferred walking. One rode, two walked or one walked while one rode and one was worn, etc. whatever worked according to their age, needs and desires at the moment.

Another option if you need car seats at your destination- check the stroller(s) and use the car seat(s) as de facto strollers in the airport. Especially recommended for walking children. Never check a car seat as luggage and use onboard whenever possible.

Since you have the luxury of traveling with the other parent, you have more options.

How old are the kids? And will you absolutely definitely need two strollers at all your destinations?

I'd do everything within my power to figure how to do this with one stroller only--if you have a baby and a toddler, could you do carrier/stroller or stroller/walker? Could you get a small umbrella stroller to check? Could you rent a stroller at destinations?

These probably only work if you have 2 singletons, though--not sure any of them are good if you have 18 month old twins.

I'd go with an umbrella stroller and a backpack/sling.

I'd go with an umbrella stroller and a backpack/sling.

Seconded. My favorite carrier is the Ergo, which can be worn on the front or the back and holds up to 35 lbs.

I assume the 4 year old is not into strollers anymore so you only need it for your destination (amusement park? cruise?) the little one will use it more so make life simple and go with two. You'll be miserable dragging such a huge stroller everywhere (unless the older one has special needs and does use a stroller on a regular basis).

I will agree. My kids are three years apart. We did the carrier and stroller initially and then stroller + Trunki (toddler ride on -carry on) later.

I'd nix the double stroller also, especially with a 4-year-old.

We did an RTW last year and I have the laziest 4-year-old on earth. I would strongly urge you to forget about the stroller (unless you need it as a convenient way to carry bags) because it creates more problems than it solves. I had an ergo carrier that was awesome and so useful. I don't know how much sightseeing you plan to do in Bangkok, but the streets/sidewalks are not stroller friendly. I traveled to Japan with an 18-month-old and a 4-year-old, with a stroller and an ergo, and my arm was crazy strong after folding up the stroller and schlepping two kids, one stroller, my purse, etc., up and down every flight of stairs at every subway stop. From what I have seen, other countries don't have the elevators that the US does.

Having two strollers is not very practical - you tie up both parents with strollers so you normal carryon in that case would have to be a backpack as pushing a stroller and dragging a roller behind is very difficult.

We traveled quite a bit with out double mclaren triumph both in us and overseas and found it to be very practical for young twins but this may not the case if you have a 4 yr old. Try it in store to see how kids fit in it - 7 mo old may be too young for it and 4 yo too old.

I would consider a backpack carrier (Kelty or similar) for 7 mo old for dad to carry and let the other one walk and just manage your pace. You can always buy a cheap umbrella stroller for $20-50 pretty much anywhere you go if it becomes a necessity.

Another option is "sit and stand" or smth similar designed for kids of different age - some of those accommodate a basket for infant and still allow an older child to sit (or stand) when you push it.

AKL, MEL, FRA are well covered by public transport, BKK has cheap taxis and you can easily rent a car in HNL and YVR if you need to get around. I think you'll manage just fine.
