It's my understanding, perhaps mistaken, that the Chase United Club credit card provides the holder with various insurance coverages.

For example, if I buy my ticket on UA with the card, get sick, and can't travel, I think the card will reimburse me for the ticket or change fees. Is that correct? If so, has anyone successfully made such a claim? If so, how does one do such a thing exactly?

Separately, how would it work in the case of a cancelled flight (mech) which necessitates the need for a hotel room or ticket on another carrier?

Separately, how would it work in the case of an accident in a rental car?

Not sure about the United card, but the Sapphire card has Trip Cancellation insurance which will refund you the amount of the ticket due to disease or physical illness of you or an immediate family member. This benefit covers up to $5000 (but you must relinquish any unused travel credits/coupons).

It also has Trip Delay insurance which will pay for a hotel (and food, etc) for a delay more than 12 hours. This benefit is for up to $300.

In general, Chase's credit card insurance benefits are not hard to claim.

They do however require documentations.

For example, to claim the trip delay insurance, you will need itemize receipts for the expenses you incurred.

For trip cancelation due to illness, you will need a note from your doctor, etc etc

The benefit guide of your card has more details about the claims process.
