Congrats on a nice find. Good work!!! The destination did not excite me but for those who got in, I hope you guys post a trip report somewhere. I'm holding out for the rumored change in the visa law, which is not under the airline control, of course.

Hoping that 3-year visas for American citizens (tourists and businesspeople) will be approved in the next few months.
That is a great rumor! To be able to have the visa application processed in 15 days or less is very good news too. I can hardy wait as that was the only thing that held me back too. The bad news is that UA may have pulled out of this market by the time this happens!

Interesting. Although, the visa requirements are reciprocal. It isn't pressing for me to go to Russia for any reason. Just by there being a visa req and the approval time is a turn off. More Russians want to come to the USA than Americans going to Russia. So...even a $200 flight doesn't get me there... Hehe.

Yeah, that's it in a nutshell. I've been to less than 30 countries so I still have plenty of places to go where I don't have to jump through visa hoops. The only one I jumped the hoops for was Bolivia, but that was a very special trip, not a budget trip. For me, a "cheap" trip has to be not just inexpensive in price but also easy on the nerves...just a nice way to chill. Having someone "approve" my visa and pass judgement on me, there is just no reason for it as there are plenty of other places I can go without hassle. But I have heard rumors that Russia is planning to relax some of this, so we'll hold out hope.

Pair that with the lower income for Russians compared to Americans and its almost unfair, a remainder of how good we have it...I wish I could get on this, visa fee and all! ^ :D Here's hoping that it comes back

I'm glad it worked out. Sorry it is so expensive. Also, not to be mean but that just goes to show you that Russia can not "price match" the Visa reqs for Americans because the interest in travel there is NOT high. They need to make it more comfortable, as Americans definitely do vote with their dollar when it comes to vacations. Yes, you may get FTers that want to go there but your average Americans traveling are the same people who still talk about skipping Mexico, although there are many beautiful peaceful parts to the country.
Cheers to this coming back so all those pesky Ruskies can make great use of it.
I'm even nervous about using DME/SVO as a transit point to an onward connection without having an ACTUAL Visa. Although, it states you can transit for 24hours with a connection to a different country, some times all things Russian can be conflicting!

; ) Yeah, I would not recommend Moscow as a transit point

Have done a transit via Moscow to Rija. No problem, free lounge, friendly people, free tea and Russian soap operas on the television. That said, my experience was positive. However, if you attempt the same on a boomerang trip without a third country in the middle, it may not work as your carrier may balk at no VISA, even if the Russian consulate says OK. BA pulled that on me in London a few years back and I lost a free BA flight + fees minted with the BA card. However, I have made up my losses and more with BA since so they are not on my "&*%$ list".

Can't recall 100% correct figures, but:
~$160 for visa processing
$100 for visa (because Russia charges US citizens $100 for visa, US made Russians pay $100 also)
$100 for one year extension (total for 2 years)
+misc visa delivery fees

It is the same thing - 100$ reciprocity extra fee = 100 for one year extension
And it is optional.
U can get 1-yr visa just for 160$
(link if you don't believe http://travel.state.gov/visa/fees/fees_5455.html?cid=8941#fnc)
So it is 160 $ for 1 year and 260$ for 2 year
Plus DHL - but this costs about 20-30 $

Don't be. Our company has run 11 people through SVO this summer to Ukraine with no visas, just onward tickets. Not a single hitch going or coming. SVO has worked out a very transparent process for transit passengers. I think DME has too but I'm Delta/Aeroflot-centric so I can't say for sure.
Be at peace though. It works and it works well at SVO.
