US Airways Dividend Miles - AWE16 Emergency Landing in ABQ 7/28

Listening to my scanner here in ABQ - AWE16 PHX-JFK declared an emergency and diverted to ABQ. Is on approach to runway 8 now with emergency vehicles standing by. Not sure of the reason.

Landed safely - a conversation between the pilot and the ground controller on the ABQ Ground frequency indicates multiple smoke alarms in the forward cargo compartment.

Well, that's a plenty good reason to divert, particularly given recent issues with some batteries in cargo running away and catching fire over the past several years. Odds are it was sensor malfunction, but sounds as though the crew did the right thing.

Looks like they sent a replacement aircraft over from PHX, which has just landed. Interesting that the replacement is an A320, while the original flight is listed as an A321 on flightaware.

Probably the only thing they had ready back in the shop. Four F pax will be downgraded. Plus those who were in the deluxe exit rows on the 321 won't be happy.

PHX-JFK F is always full. I'm sure they were all more than happy to land safely in ABQ vs. the Arizona desert.
