Hopefully I'm asking this in the right place :)
Okay, so recently I decided to open a Chase account. It's my first bank account and everything seemed to go smoothly when I set it up online. I left the account empty while waiting for the debt card to arrive.
Today I got a letter telling me I had requested a change of address. I attempted to log into the online account to check that only to be informed it was locked for unknown reasons. I went down to the bank (as I had no account number yet or anything they could use on the phone).
There they called the number again and were told that I would need to fax over a letter from the Social Security office stating that the SSN# I used is actually mine. The CS rep told me to run a credit report on myself when I got home, I did so and everything (accept one little thing from when I was 18) came up clear (and empty as I have NO credit, no banking history, nothing).
I'm really confused as to what is going on and why I need to prove that the SSN# is mine.
Has anyone else ever come across a problem like this? I now have to wait until monday to go sit in the SS office to get this paper just to get my account open. It's worrying me as well because I have no clue what's going on.

What couldve happened is that someone mistakenly entered your social security number when opening their account. I've seen it happen more than you would imagine that when someone opens an account they inverse the numbers or just mistypes. I wouldn't worry too much about it outside of the fact that you have to go and waste time at the office.

"I mean, I have the card, I have a freaking passport with the same number on it"

Your passport has your Social Security number on it?

Yeah, they've been flagged for providing false documentation, and what scam was planned, I suggest they drop it now, as we are not going to explain how to make your false documents look better.

For any sincere person, I would always recommend that you set up very first banking account in your entire life at a live location but the sincere person probably doesn't need my advice, as their parents probably assisted them in doing this when they were in the single digit age bracket. Setting up your first ever bank account, as an adult, online...sure, it's a flag, and it should be a flag. It's very much out of the ordinary.

I misspoke about the SSN# number being on the passport. I realize that now.
I'm 22 and yes, this is my first bank account. My last job used prepaid cards for the paychecks (Walmart, gotta love them) so I dealt with that instead of getting an account at a bank. I also had parents who thought that a bank account is useless for a teenager. If I got money from them it was in the form of cash and only cash, and I was expected to save it in a jar in my bedroom. Simpler times I guess.

I wasn't asking for help in forging documents, how you came to that conclusion I don't know. I was asking if anyone has ever had something like this happen to them before, being denied a bank account based on credit reports when you have no credit.

They sent me a letter today stating the account has been closed, they also included the companies they used to check my credit history. When I went to check, everything comes back clear, no open accounts, no nothing. It's blank down the list.

I'm going in on Monday to get the letter from the SS office and hopefully getting this straightened out. I start my new job soon and need a bank account for my paychecks.

I honestly didn't mean to cause trouble by asking this here. I just really wanted to know if anyone else had had a problem like this. :(

Thank you! Hopefully that is the case and things will be fixed fairly quickly!
Second question for you if you can answer it. If someone used my SSN# by mistake while opening account, wouldn't that show up on a credit history report?

Just go in to the branch and open your account there. SO much easier and faster. The other one is probably already closed out or will auto-close.
