Avis - Avis Ez Toll Tags Not Recognized

I rent from Avis weekly, and always rent cars with Ez Toll tags, but a lot of times when I pass a toll station the device is not recognized, and I ended up with 25 dollar fines here and there.

Is it a design defect? Can I call Avis and ask them to pay for the fine?

Call eToll (the number is usually on the metal box) as soon as you realize the tag isn't being recognized, and avoid electronic tolls until they resolve the issue. If electronic tolls are required, the tolling agency should be able to use a picture of the rental's license plate to charge the appropriate toll.

Even easier, then. As soon as you know there's a problem with the box, call the eToll customer service number and have them check the tag. In the interim, just avoid EZPass toll lanes and pay with cash - I don't know of any toll facilities in PA/NY/NJ that have eliminated the cash option yet...
