Hi folks - new to this forum but I have question about hotel choice. Attending a wedding next month that is held at Fairmont (950 Mason) but I am a Marriott guy and looking for Marriott hotel.
I see that there are two locations near Fairmont: Marquis on Fourth St (1.1 miles) and Union Square (0.4 miles). Any recommendation which to chose? My criteria include:
- Distance to Fairmont (walk or cab)
- Hotel quality
- Upgrade possibilty (I am Platinum)
- Distance to Financial District Amtrak (walk or cab)
Any other info would be appreciated. Also any ideas of getting from/to SFO?

I would stay at the JW Marriott. Walking distance to the Fairmont, less than 2 blocks from Union Square, nicer than the Marquis and Marriott Union Square, less than 2 blocks from the cable car.

The JW Marriott is the nicer property and has the better concierge lounge versus the Marquis (based on my personal experience; I have not stayed at the Union Square property). If you are a light sleeper, I would go with the Marquis. I stayed at the JW a few years ago, and I noticed the emergency vehicles at night even though I stayed on one of the higher floors.

you might get a better response if you put SFO in your header letting others know which area you want info about............Which is better hotel to stay is too general to city/choices of over 3000

I am using my points and JW does not offer on points, thus the 2 hotels mentioned.
I am a heavy sleeper so I won't hear anything - Mrs. on the other hand, who knows. We both coming from Central time, attending a wedding, away from the kids.. lol so I am sure anywhere decent will be fine. It is only sleeping as we will be away from the hotel all day.

Is a Renaissance acceptable? If so, the Stanford Court is across the street from the Fairmont.
Keep in mind that the Union Square and JW are three very steep blocks down from the crest of Nob Hill (the Ren and the Fairmont are at the crest). Not a problem if you have 100% mobility,of course.

We are not fat!!! haha. Step hill is fine - we are athletic. There is always a cab.
Thanks all - I think I have a good idea where to stay.
How about some info on ride to/from SFO?

cab ride from SFO to downtown (either JW or the Renaissance) wasn't that expensive. i think i paid under 40 w/ tip. evening arrival, smooth sailing on the 101.

For the JW, $8.25/person on BART (rail), directly from SFO to a few blocks from the hotel. About 50 minutes.
$17.00/person on SuperShuttle (shared van), door to door, but might stop a few places for dropoffs

Thanks all - with your inputs, I did get a room at Stanford Court - no brainer as the wedding reception is across the street.

I stayed at the Ren last year, I BARTed it and it was a schelp getting up the hill but all I had was my 21" roller board. If youre not in good shape jump on the cabble car till the top of the Hill then get off across the street from the Ren and walk the little ways to the entrance, thats if you BART it (probably the cheapest way)
the stop is the intersection of Powell & California
