my annual fee is due for this CITI ThankYou Premier card ; naturally, im going to cancel this...but heres my question. this card has an $12,000 credit line. Is it better to apply for OTHER CITI cards and then just move the credit line over to the new one from the Thank You card or cancel this first..and then apply for other CITI Cards? Im due for a churn anyways..

From my experience and what I have read, Citi does not move around credit for new apps like Chase does. I would / will canx mine before annual fee is due.

From what I understand it takes months for this credit line to get removed from Citi's system after a card is canx.

If you xl you have to be sure there are no TY points left as you will lose them if IRC.

I am probably going to xl mine also unless I get a nice retention offer. Not sure how CITI TYP works with retention offers though.

You can check this thread to see about CITI retention offers:

Citi retention offer reports [All cards] (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/credit-card-programs/899591-citi-retention-offer-reports-all-cards.html)

It's mostly about retention offers for AA cards, but since the title states ALL cards you may be able to find something in TYPs if you sift through it.

In the past, they offered me an addt'l 5000 thank you points to keep the card IF i paid the annual fee.........I cant justify $50 for paying $125 hehehe...

Yeah--I think its time to nip this one in the bud.

The companion ticket is worth well over the $125 annual fee, if you use it. In addition, the 15% discount on airfare can be used for up to 4 people at a time.

For example, I booked (for my parents with their card) 4 RT tickets from LAX to Hawaii during peak time that came up to just under $1500 (base fare), but the 15% discount saved them over $200.

That said, if you don't use those, then the annual fee is not worth it and the retention offers are horrible.

And yes, the TY Points from the card expire if you have no other ThankYou relationship.

Also, Citi rarely offers to move credit or convert cards

You have 30 days to use up the TYPs associated with the canceled card, regardless whether you have other TY relationship. TYPs are card specific despite there is no detectible distinction at redemption. You can see exactly where your TYPs coming from when you go to the details of your account summary under Expiration tab. (you need to click ALL in order for them to show up even when it says nothing expires in 90 days.)

Citi would do a hard pull if you really want to move credit line from one card to another. The only time it does not do a hard pull is at account opening when it wants you to move lines.

I called Citi today about my Premier card. I was hoping to downgrade to an annual fee card like the Forward card. No luck... the agent wouldn't downgrade it to anything. Interestingly he suggested that I call back next month when the annual fee is due and see if they can offer anything at that time. I've heard of many people being able to convert their Premier card to Forward card in the past... is this a new policy?

Welcome to FT :D (first post? lurking since 08/11?)

Front line agent might not be able to do a thing, but they can route you to a credit specialist, who is likely able to give you more options! I had: 5k TYP for spending 1k in 3 months retention bonus, change my card to TY Preferred, or change my card to Forward (I had to ask for this one).

I'd get the ball rolling. It takes 45 days to change your card, and I'd much rather not hassle with having the annual fee post, then having to roll it back.
