not a single Hilton Hotel at the French Riviera (the only Hilton Cannes is now a JW Marriott), the only Hilton France offering a reasonable location left is Hilton Arc de Triomphe, but it's not acceppting Points anymore, so expect it to disapear as a Hilton Hotel soon.
What is that? Any ideas?

And there were rumours of Lyon being put up for sale. And last year Evian was supposed to be sold too. Orly is not so nice, nor is La Defense. Not good at all.
Brand recognition? Limited French skills among US employees :D?

I found La Defense to be not that bad, but: location, location, location. It's a major pain in the neck to get from there into city center. Orly was never an option for me, because of: location, location, location.
I stayed at the Hilton Lyon once. OK, but how often do you want to spend time in Lyon, unless you have some major business there.

I think that renaming a hotel would be less costly than droping a hotel...

I really, really wish the Cannes property was still a Hilton.:(
I loved it there; tacky and quirky as the decor was, the location was fantastic, and was treated very well!

I guess Accor is hard to fight, the number of properties per hotel group in France :
Hilton : 8 properties
Hyatt : 3 properties
Starwood : 6 properties
Marriott : 19 properties
IHG : 52 properties
Accor : almost 1500 properties (40% of these properties are owned by Accor, it may be difficult to find a property to re-flag)

What do you mean tha the ADT is not accepting points any more?
And, if your favorite Cannes property is no longer a Hilton, it likely is another chain's hotel.
And that it is!
JW Marriott Cannes.
And, if you like the Riviera so much you ought to investigate Marriott for in addition to the Cannes property, they have the
1) AC/Renaissance Juan les Pins
2). Marriott on the border with Monaco
3). and some time in 2013 -- the AC Nice which is the former Four Points Nice.

Lyon is the food capital of France. It is an ancient Medieval City. It is one of the gateways to Burgundy and for that matter to Provence, as well.

Katar Hospitality has bought from Starwood Capital four 4*/5* hotels in Paris, and Cote Azur.
-Hotel Louvre, Paris
-Concorde Lafayette, Paris
-Martinez, Cannes
-Palais de la Mediterranee, Nice
The new owners say they will ask Hyatt to manage the hotels. What a chance this would be (have been) for Hilton. The Martinez as part of Waldorf Astoria Collection, side by side with legendary Carlton Cannes! Another splendid property in Nice! Two more luxurious Hiltons in Paris at prime locations!
What do you mean tha the ADT is not accepting points any more?
Uh, if you try to make an award reservation now, ADT comes up, but with a notation that the hotel does not participate in points redemptions.
Only one of the reasons (along with ridiculous redemption rates for some hotels) why Hilton is rapidly becoming the worst of the major hotel chain frequent guest programs IMO.

That's crazy! Are they leaving the system as one poster had indicated? Are they carving out a new type of hotel in the Hilton system that only awards points but not redeems them?
What has a HHonors employee had to say about this?

The departure of the ADT property from Hilton is confirmed in the master ADT thread.
People who have lots of stays in Paris specifically and France generally may need a chain other than Hilton. Every hotel chain has gaps in the network.

I always found their properties to be a bit out of the way in Paris. The Eiffel Tower was a nice hotel but still out of the way for me. I prefer the Marriott chain there. Many are in good locations. I wish there was a Marriott in Lyon. The Hilton is out of the center there as well.

Thanks 3C.
I wonder if they will go independent or fly another flag.
I doubt it will be Marriott as they have the new Renaissance nearby as well as the Marriott Champs, as does SPG with the Le Meridien.
Perhaps Accor, IHG or Hyatt.

It would have been nice for Hilton to grab those properties but I can live with them as part of Hyatt. What a catch for Hyatt!!!
We just spent 10 night in France and I wanted to use Hilton points but didn't because the other chains had better options available or Hilton had no presence. In Paris we had the Hilton booked but ended up choosing the Radisson Blu Champs Elysees over the Hilton due to size and location. In Cannes there was no Hilton option so we went with the IC Carlton and in Nice there was again no Hilton's so we went with SPG and the LeMeridien.
I didn't realize the Paris property was leaving and this really makes the situation in France for Hilton even worse since they won't have a prime hotel in such an important city.

Hilton is so weak because others are so strong. It is hard to impossible to fight Arcor in its home market. Obviously they (and other anglo saxon chains) do not invest too much in such markets dominated by French chains (the same is true in Belgium) The same is true for Hilton in Spain. How should they beat NH and other strong domestic brand. Hilton is Europe has been UK based for quite a while and they are strong there.

Maybe true, but why SO weak, at least in Paris?? Marriott has 5 properties in Paris proper, and a few more near by. Starwood has 4..

Sooner or later Hilton will equalize the relation. One or two more properties in Paris, one or two new in Southern France. I am optimistic

True. Maybe also something behind the curtain what we cannot see? "Do not touch my home market - I do not touch yours"? In this context also interesting the sale of Accor´s US Motel 6 hotels to Blackstone.

^ And will I join you as second one and invite you on a bottle of champagne in the hotel bar of the new Hilton Cote Azur :)
PS: I meant "equalize" not "egalize". Always Zee Germans ;)
Did 2 1 night stays at the WA Trianon Palace on a road trip to France recently, absolutely loved it, one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. Infact I'm considering booking a week there at some point just for a nice holiday.
If this is what all the WAs are like I hope to see more and more of them appearing in Europe in the future.
I'd prefer to see more quality, not quantity. You can keep your DTs and HGIs thankyou very much! :D

„Wir werden in Europa bis 2015 knapp 120 neue Häuser eröffnen“, sagte Nord- und Zentraleuropachef Olivier Harnisch dem Handelsblatt.
"We will open in Europe almost 120 new hotels by 2015", said Olivier Harnisch, who is responsible for Northern- and Central Europe, to "Handelsblatt".
So we will hopefully see some new ones in Paris and France soon as well. Especially as Mr. Harnisch is French (and German) and has experience also with luxury hotels (responsible for the new excellent W=A Berlin). Please take care of Paris M. Harnisch! ;)

Incredible and incapable. The gravediggers of Hilton France are yet on duty. An HGI and a Hampton near Disneyland by 2015. And no word about central Paris or ADT. If this is the final statement and the future strategy for France I better look for alternatives such as MRW or CC.
Why is Hilton so weak in France? Well, Best Western have a lot of hotels there, and they're on the whole much better than their US equivalents. Same in Italy, Germany, Belgium, Austria......
My last Hilton France experience was in Strasbourg three years ago. The room was OK, but the location and service were appalling.
I hate Accor, but use them when there is no other option. But BW is well worth a look if you're traveling in Europe.
